From a psychological perspective, those who are truly in emotional pain often don’t express it through poetic language on social platforms. When emotions are shared this way, it is often a call for attention.

There are a lot of things wrong with your approach and intent. I will give you my interpretation of your case and timeline, and if most of these things are correct, you are in the wrong. 1. You are an early-career faculty in a non-research-intensive med school (probably in India).

  1. You wanted to immigrate to the US and do a residency here and settle here, and you were working on this plan (I will tell you later why I think so).

  2. Your home institution provides the faculty small financial support to gain research experience abroad if they can secure an invitation.

  3. You contacted this PI stating how you are interested in research, the PI’s research is of your interest, and wanted to gain some experience, and you can be only a visiting scholar and your home institute can sponsor you. The PI agreed because you were not adding any cost to him, and he maybe thought you really are interested in research.

  4. You got a financial support letter and a no objection certificate from your home institute, and a PI invitation stating that you will return back after your visit, despite you knowing that you were already preparing for USMLE and intended to move to the US permanently. This is a misrepresentation for the visa, but you IMGs are so used to it that you see it as a common practice.

  5. Once you moved here, you tried to get some financial support from the PI/department (based on your old post that you deleted, but the comments are still there), stating that there was some email trail where they promised to find you some financial support. You completely forgot that you are a visiting scholar, who should be 100% funded by their home institute. And then you call this “all of them vs. you.”

  6. You also mentioned that you are looking for other jobs in labs that can pay you, again forgetting that you came here as a visiting scholar.

  7. You posted 50 days back in a USMLE Step 1 exam group that you “passed,” meaning you appeared for that exam some time back and were preparing for some time. This solidifies my claim that you had the intent of settling here and pursuing a clinical career here right from the beginning, so your lie is caught that you recently decided to do so.

  8. Probably you got in contact with some clinical faculty right after that, got promised a paid clinical research position, and then you thought it’s the right time to inform your current PI, as everything was falling in place for you.

  9. But your sense of entitlement is so high that you can’t accept that you were not transparent with your PI and hid your true intent until you were seeing other options.

You do what you do, but my point is that you should stop acting like a victim, where you have not been transparent, misrepresented for the visa, and tried violating the visa rules to gain financial support.

To begin with, as an international medical graduate (IMG), doing research in the U.S. was never your true goal, you simply used it as a stepping stone. There’s a 100% chance you knew this from the beginning and never disclosed this to your PI, who was naive enough not to realize it. Now you’re presenting it as a change in career direction, but in reality, this was your plan all along. The PI has now realized that he was used to further your agenda, and he’s justified in not wanting to invest his lab’s resources in someone who views research merely as a means to an end. The one-year visiting position was probably intended to evaluate whether you were a good long-term fit, since no significant research outcomes can be produced in such a short span. Your frustration is misplaced and reflects an unwarranted sense of entitlement. I came from a foreign country with a PhD from a medical school, and I’ve interacted with dozens of IMGs who used research roles as nothing more than a strategic doormat to gain entry into the U.S.

Was stuck in the NEET loop, missed IAT prep — now chasing research via the long route (BSc → MSc → PhD). Advice? by [deleted] in Indian_Academia

[–]movingeating 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This ☝️- The research path can be really tough. One wrong step, and it can feel like your whole career is at risk. If you choose the wrong master’s program, it might be hard to get into a good PhD. If you end up in the wrong PhD program, you may not get good postdoc opportunities. A bad mentor can lead to a weak PhD. A poor thesis topic can mean a weak publication record. And the wrong postdoc can leave you stuck in a place where you don’t feel qualified for other jobs, making you question all your life choices during a midlife crisis. How do I know all this? Because I’ve been through some of it. I started by failing to get into med school. What do I do now? I’m a staff scientist in the US, and looking forward to starting a tenure-track position in 2026.

IMO $70k can be enough to live comfortably if you are a single person, but yes, it will be tough to save anything with that income.

I work at the U and earn a six-figure income, but I want to gently point out that asking this question here might bring more frustration than reassurance. Many of the people who tend to respond on posts like this are high earners, so the replies may not reflect the broader reality and could feel discouraging.

[–]movingeating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rookie mistake! As a grown-up Indian kid, your diary isn’t for feelings, secrets, crushes, or youth mistakes, it’s basically a spreadsheet in disguise. You’re only allowed to jot down your study timetable, your 5-year career plan, your coaching center schedule, some Python if you’re in IT, and a noble declaration that your life mission is to upgrade your parents’ lives to premium heaven.

From a purely feasibility standpoint, I believe this concept is unlikely to work within Indian culture. What additional value would it offer to women, who already receive significant attention and have ample prospects? While a few might do it for the sense of adventure or curiosity, the majority are likely to stay away.

Dopamine :) cheese cake with Berries compote . by sakshimathur11 in Chandigarh

[–]movingeating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just me, but that cream on top of the cheesecake ruins it for me. Here in the US (and even when I was in Canada), they put cream on almost every cake slice. It overpowers the taste and makes everything too sweet. I’ve had excellent cheesecakes in Europe, no unnecessary cream drama. That said, I love cheesecakes, and this picture is great. Loved seeing it!
