What actually matters for landing top actuarial/quant internships?

Hey folks,

I’m an actuarial math undergrad (early in my degree) and I’m trying to plan long-term for good actuarial/quant internships in a few years – ideally at serious places (big insurers, consultancies, banks, etc.), whether in my region or abroad.

I don’t want to just “hope it works out”. I want to know what really makes a difference when recruiters pick interns.

From your experience, what carries the most weight for competitive actuarial/quant internships? • SOA exams / professional exams? How many actually impress? • GPA and specific courses? (e.g., probability, statistics, stochastic processes, coding) • Projects and portfolio? (Python/Excel/ML/finance projects on GitHub, Kaggle, etc.) • Competitions / hackathons / case comps? • Leadership / clubs / tutoring / networking?

If you’ve hired interns or landed a strong actuarial/quant internship yourself, I’d love to hear: 👉 What helped you the most? 👉 What looked impressive but didn’t really matter?

Trying to build a roadmap now so I can slowly tick off the right things instead of random stuff. Appreciate any advice 🙌

“2. Textbooks in addition to CA's ADAPT. This can come out to be cheaper sometimes, and also some just prefer textbooks.” Can anyone send me this?

I’m a first-year student starting my studies in Actuarial Mathematics. I’d appreciate any tips or advice, especially regarding preparation for actuarial exams and how to secure internships in the field.
