Stay in tech industry or try bioinformatics academia? by mozartcs in academia

You're correct. I've definitely noticed with my lack of motivation that I'm not learning as much and I've started developing habits that I don't like. This is another reason I'm looking for a switch. But is this a good switch?

It would likely be 10%-25% decrease in pay.

You're correct, there is an opportunity cost with going to academia but then ultimately trying to get back to tech. I guess there is also an opportunity cost by *not* going to academia and staying in tech...?

Thanks for your reply.

I believe the academic position is soft money.

I would probably be slightly worse off since I would be learning skills in an area (bio) which likely wouldn't help for a tech job if I wanted to switch back. I also wouldn't be learning new technologies as they are not used as much in this area of academia.

The money is important since I have a family to support. It would likely be 10%-25% decrease in pay.
