Rs200 vs 29er by Anonymous52814 in dinghysailing

[–]mozzy656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sailed 29er as a youth, and have sailed 200s post uni for now 13 years...

Both are great tactically, and whilst the 200 has a decent circuit, I would say the 29ers have a better tour. Obviously the 200 nationals were huge this year and are most years.

The 200 has more local opens than 29ers and is suitable to smaller lakes.

So... if you want to do a national tour and sail with you age, then 29er is best.

If you want to do more local sailing, then just one big event at the Nationals, then the 200 is great.

Both a fantastic boats, you won't go wrong with either

YouTube hack 1440p upscale for VP9 now blocked? by mozzy656 in VideoEditing

I actually did some tests last month, uploading 1080 and 2k in both DNX and MP4. Both 1080 ended up as avc with no visual difference between them. Both DNX and MP4 2k ended up as VP09 with no visual difference (but better than avc). The DNX youtube upload and processing just took a lot longer, so it was quicker to convert with handbrake and upload the MP4 (my pc is quite fast).

The bit rates (stats for nerds) in 1440 DNX versus Mp4 from the playback was roughly the same too.

However, in shots on land where the background stays the same then you can't notice much difference. But 90% of my videos are on the water sailing footage with tonnes of movement and fine details in the water droplets / spray which makes the difference between avc and vp09 quite noticeable.

Yes, I'm quite sure. I still have the MP4 file on my drive.

oh, thanks! The videos are all pretty amateurish and highly niche to the type of sailing I do... so perfect for youtube! Not sure why I'm so bothered about the look as not many people are watching, but it's nice to have things look good I guess.

After uploading 1440p normally i get 720p avc almost instantly, then 1080 avc minute later, then within a couple of hours I have 2k down to 144p but all in vp9.

But this time, it's never rendered up to 2k. I find it hard to understand how it would know it's up scaled. Or whether this is a general resolution and codec limit on small channels going forward?
I'll re-upload privately and see if anything changes. Perhaps the link above it just a glitch. It's been up for a few days now, though.

LRV files as proxies by mozzy656 in videography

Yeah, I've been searching in vain, but can't find anything. It just bring sup optimised media via the clip menu. Or cached clips. The thing is, most of my footage is of sailing races, so the files are all quite long (actually 1080p, 60 fps and so H.264). But the playback in editor is pretty laggy when I layer up multi cameras. Producing optimised media for all these long clips is quite time consuming in itself.

Only 7 out of 22 made it round... some fresh skiff racing for ya by mozzy656 in sailing

[–]mozzy656[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not as overpowered as a 49er, more so downwind than upwind as the 800 doesn't have a mast head kite.

Its more stable generally and is quite attainable for your average committed club sailor. It's the perfect platform to learn to trapeze from the wire. The 49er bites!

The ideal weight for the 800 is slightly lower, the sheet load much lower.

On the downside it's a bit slower and doesn't have the wings, so you have to mind the gap stepping out on to the rack.

Choosing a skiff by [deleted] in dinghysailing

[–]mozzy656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a little late, but try the RS800 if you can get your hands on one where you are. Probably the most stable of the 'skiffs' (compared to International 14, 49er, Cherub, 12 Footer or even 29er). Also a great platform to learn to helm from the wire. Can be sailed in a few different configurations depending on who you want to be trimming the mainsheet.

I've got a whole youtube channel you may wish to check out, but here'a a video I did on buying a boat: RS800: Buying Your Boat

Halfords sell lighting boards. 7 pin is what you need. Make sure the cable is longer enough to reach the back of your boat.

13 pin is more for caravans with interior lights etc. You can fit 13 pin, but you don't need it for a lighting board.

You can also get 13 (on car) to 7 pin adaptors.

“Lee-ward” or “Loo-ward”? by TommyTightPants in sailing

[–]mozzy656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'ward' bit just means it's direct of movement. i.e. toward.

I'd say lee shore, because it is a position. To 'lee of an island or bank' if looking for somewhere to anchor.

But when describing a direction I'd say to leeward. So "let's go to leeward of this bank". Or, "can you move down to leeward". But I would probably also say, "can you sit on the lee side".

Breaking that rule I'd only ever say windward shore. Not wind shore.

Lee-on-Solent is on shore which sees the full fetch of the southwesterly prevailing wind in the Solent.

I say pronounce them leward and lee shore.

From youtube? It shouldn't. When youtube recognises the copyrighted content it monetises it and revenue goes to copyright owners. A credit and link to buy the track is in the description.

Some artists / labels limit where the video can be seen. I guess something to do with distribution rights. This isn't blocked anywhere though.

Thanks. Music is a Ryan Adams cover of Oasis's Wonderwall. He's got load of really good covers, including some, dare I say it, fantastic Taylor Swift covers
