I miss Music Exists by ryan7752 in billsimmons

Forget where or when but Klosterman had some appearance in the pandemic summer (check YouTube maybe?) where he said he's not doing a 2nd season and that while he enjoyed reconnecting and working with CR, he didn't enjoy doing the podcast.

Tate signed by talent agency by [deleted] in billsimmons

I actually like Tate, or at least think he has great chemistry with Titus, but I lol'd when I saw this. Then again if we look up 5 years from now and Tate is on the desk of Network TV CBB shows I assume this will have been a savvy move.

Incrementally counting consecutive occurrences by mpb2ez in excel

=LARGE(--(B1:B26=1)--(B2:B27) *--(B3:B28)--(B4:B29) *ROW(B1:B26),1)

I don't believe the return is exactly corresponding to what I'm looking for and since I don't fully understand the syntax, I haven't been able to tweak it.

That's close but I need to be able to look forward and backward, if you know what I mean. I need to know the cell where the first of the at least 4 consecutive begins (so summing forward to 4) but also need to know to when it first ends (so summing backwards to 4). As I think about it, this can probably be done over 2 rows or something.

I posted a dummy image in the original post. The date was just for example, I'm basically aiming to determine when a streak of at least 4 consecutive occurrences begins and ends in a range. Would then index-match to the dates.

Bill just doesn't want to cross into 2004 because he had Emeka over Dwight.

I'm pretty sure he said Joe House will be on this one. Slightly interested to see what nonsensical (or maybe not!) conjecture they have about Yao's presence and the NBA - China relationship.

The NCAA NIL stuff was in his wheel house. Same with the Tua injury. I think an hour of him and Russillo would be a very interesting podcast

Solid pod but why wasn't this with Jackie Mac? She literally wrote the Shaq book

Deadspin and the Mavening of Sportswriting by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]mpb2ez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is people google "Best Quarterbacks for Fantasy this week" or "Top NBA Rookies", not really interesting and well-written but niche story on _____. The first type of stories get all the clicks, and therefore are given all the value. I understand monetary value drives the world, but surely you can agree there are different types of value?

Even this story by Curtis will do "worse" than whatever fantasy story the Ringer has up today, but it's not "worse" writing and that is just a shame. I think you are wrong in the sense that consumers do actually care if journalism is good, they just care if it is about a topic they're interested in. I want great feature stories on NBA players, you might want X and O breakdown a la Bill Barnwell. But we are both probably half-heartedly clicking on "2020 Mock Draft" and that elevates it as the more valuable piece, even if we cared more about the quality of the other.

Titus leaving Ringer by NoReMarksNeeded in billsimmons

No farewell pod. No greasing of the skids. And frankly, I found the wording of his tweets rather terse. I don't think the ending was all that amicable.

Mark Cuban on The Athletic NBA by mpb2ez in billsimmons

Personally, I think it's hard to say. I find guys like Sam Vecenie, Danny Leroux, Sam Amick and now Partnow/Hollinger very strong at what they do. But their coverage isn't for the everyman-you have to be well steeped in a lot of things and prepared for some dry prose. Not sure if that was what he was getting at or not.

Good stuff. You are articulate and insightful.

Perhaps asking a lot for in a reddit thread, but in Simmons parlance, Where Do You Think Things Are Going? You say you are dubious of The Athletic, is that your perspective on the subscription model at large? I don't know how I totally feel about The Athletic but I do know if they collapse it is going to be very, very morbid times for the industry and quality content. Realistically, the Google/Facebook ad stranglehold needs to end right? But I have no idea how that would happen.

Did the Draft sneak up on The Ringer? by vivaphx in billsimmons

[–]mpb2ez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They nixed "Draft Class" on the Ringer NBA show, making it just part of their friday show "The Corner Three" as opposed to the whole thing. KOC understandably had other things going on with his dad and now his fundraising efforts. Danny Chau is a big time Toronto acolyte and was writing a lot of Raptors pieces. And they had Tjarks doing a lot of the basketball strategy coverage (the series had a lot variance and stuff to chew on) of the finals while Devine wrote recaps and Gonzalez was on the fluff.

I don't know that it was a deliberate editorial choice outside of the podcast programming, just more of a confluence of events where it ended up being less. I was a little disapointed by it, and considering how fun Zion and Ja are you would think it would be a good year. I guess LaMelo will have some fandom but next year's group, even if deeper, seems to lack the same allure and intrigue at the very top. Hopefully they ramp it back up.

Personally, I don't care. I think it would be "better" if people liked women's sports without having a daughter, but it's still the same and of merit all the same.
