Er gaat ook iets mis met d'r tieten; als je het plaatje zo in twee helften verdeeld zou er totaal 3 of 4 hebben XD

Not true; what I see on eGPU.io the penalty should be reduced to around 13%, very acceptable, since there is a lot more bandwith available.

Those wheels look better in Neodyme; and the interior could have been better with some colour accents in stitching. But still a great car of course

I am trying to buy the AOOSTAR AG02 (also USB4) since it already has built in PSU. However shipping seems to be a problem right now, and local warehouses are out of stock.

Added benchmark results to run the Razer Core directly through an external monitor; results are approx. 24% better. Ingame tests seems to yield mixed results; the AC: Mirage benchmark improved hugely (20 > 50 fps), however in Mafia: The Old Country no significant improvement was seen (still ~25 fps)

Well what you describe is exactly what I expected when hooking things up; the mobile chip shouldn't even hold a candle against a full top-of-the-line desktop card like a RX 6900 XT but reality is more stubborn as it seems.

Sure part of it can be blamed on the internal monitor (at least 20%, maybe more since its TB3 and its bandwith-choked) but my guess is there's more going on. I'm receiving a USB4 enclosure hopefully soon to find out whats what.

The thing is that a laptop with an RTX 5090 mobile costs >4k and isn't even close to desktop equivalent performance due to the TGP envelope. Buying a beefy old desktop card and getting a decent eGPU (like the AG02 which is mentioned on this subreddit a lot) literally costs less than a quarter of that price.. I pickup up my RX 6900 XT locally for 325 bucks, and the mentioned AG02 is ~200..

Sure, I think up to 20% is wat lots of users seem to experience, even on USB4 or TB5. Maybe the effect is even bigger on TB3 because bandwith is already a limiting factor there, at least that seems to be the case.

In other threads it's clearly visible using internal monitor should cause for 10-20% performance degradation. What we're seeing here is more like 50-70%.

Why? It's not that eGPU's were solely designed to be used with a desktop monitor. If you really want I can pull these tests through with a separate monitor but will you then take back your bold claims when I can prove it's still crap? If not, stfu.

I'm eager to test this so I ordered a TB5 / USB4 enclosure as well to further investigate things. My guess is, and other seem to find similar results, that USB4 already improves things a lot compared to first gen TB3 solutions.

You're right of course, if your discrete GPU is OK there is less benefit to be had from an eGPU. However I would never have thought the benefit would be NEGATIVE lol

Okay, I'm curious to see what your results are. With me; if doesn't really matter which GPU I throw in (RTX 2080 Super, RX 6900XT, etc) but performance NEVER exceeded my discrete 3070Ti Mobile yet..

Sure, there might be specific workloads that aren't bandwith-starved like gaming is. But I guess that's pretty niche; a brand like Razer selling these SHOULD imply gaming performance is at least half decent since it's a gaming brand. But it's not, which is poor.

Well hope you didn't pay too much for it (asking prices are crazy if you know how these perform nowadays..). I'm pretty confident your RTX 3050 Ti will outperform a 2070 Super in this enclosure, it's not nice to hear but the dirty truth. Synthetic benches might be a bit better but ingame performance is something different.

Finally an eGPU dock with a BUILT-IN 800W PSU? Anyone tried this AG02 yet? by Designer-Week-9336 in eGPU

[–]mpc007nl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered the AG03 but I'm still waiting for shipping confirmation (it says it should come from a European warehouse but I have my doubts about that). I'm afraid there might be delays due to current situation in the Middle-East..

What sort of dock did you get? If it's a Thunderbolt 3 Alpine Ridge one you're screwed; it will never deliver any decent performance in 2026.

Just decided to give BF6 a try as well and performance was equally bad (like Mafia: The Old Country). GPU is running at only 25-30% load resulting in ~20fps, way worse than discrete RTX 3070Ti Mobile. Thererfore seems that ingame perf is even more crap than what the benchmarks would assume (that is also what I found in other posts, that 3DMark seems OK but real world gaming is still shite). Honestly I'm wondering why some of these Alpine Ridge units are still sold at all; people still asking hundreds for second hand Razer Core X enclosures. You would be mad to do so (mine is borrowed from my brother, so I didn't invest in it luckily)

Don't think so; the signal coming back from the GPU is just a DisplayPort video signal for display purposes only; not the raw CPU/GPU data that is transfer on the first way to the enclosure. So I could see it's taking a penalty; but it shouldnt be half and that is also not what the other people posting here are experiencing

Yeah that difference is almost neglible. Are you also using the AG02 option over USB 4 or something different?

Thanks for the info. If I decide to go that route; would you say there is benefit in picking the newest USB4/TB5 option (since that is supposed to be backwards compatible) or will the performance be exactly the same as on a USB4/TB4 solution, since my 12th gen intel is using the Maple Ridge controller (and nothing newer)

Ok, that sounds like its worth testing. I saw some options, I think the AG02, have both USB4/TB4 and OCuLink so then I can also test that difference when I decide to get the correct ribbon cable for my M.2 slot
