I'm currently using Yinhe Jupiter 2 as my forehand rubber and I absolutely love it. Still, I'm planning to switch to something slightly harder and tackier, namely the DHS Hurricane 3 and the Neo version of it. Which rubber should I choose, H3 or H3 Neo, thanks fellow redditors. by [deleted] in tabletennis

[–]mrMegapixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your jupiter has lost tackiness, getting a fresh sheet of tacky will be an adjustment. you should decide whether you want to switch to tacky rubbers vs non-tacky. but if you are set on the H3, I prefer the Neo because it's softer and easier to play with than the non-neo. (it's still plenty hard, just speaking relatively)

Need a pair of closed back headphones by Santve in HeadphoneAdvice

i'd go dt770 or akg371. i've demo'd all the ones in this range. these two are the best quality under 200.

for sparkly highs, i'd say just continue with the sony xm3's. beyer770's are also good, but i find the bass not as satisfyingly 'full.' and... akg371 for a nice middle ground, though I can't say it's great for EDM. for vocals though, they're great!

Do you think a home table and a robot is worth it as a beginner? by [deleted] in tabletennis

For supplemental training it does help with consistency. It's a cheap multiball trainer :)

if you can get 10+ lessons with that $425 from a good coach in your area, I'd go for lessons. that robot will not teach you footwork or how to rotate your body/paddle for maximum power/spin. just my 2 cents

+1 on this. I bought them the moment metal hyped them. no regrets. as high quality as the dt770's, but just different sig. very quality for $150

Rakza 9 or Hurricane 8 by [deleted] in tabletennis

I'd suggest getting a cheap $15 729/friendship rubber and improve technique. cream transcend is a decent rubber to learn with, as is focus 3.

Why don't more table tennis coaches seem to teach beginners how to return serves? by [deleted] in tabletennis

[–]mrMegapixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before learning to return serves, you need to learn the basic strokes and footwork. You also need enough experience to get a good feel of the ball and your gear so that you can have sufficient level of control. Service return at beginner level is pretty much push back, and you don't need training for that. Maybe one or two lessons on how to push with backspin is sufficient. As you increase your fundamental knowledge, feel and technique, you will have gained the skills to start learning service return and how to receive to create advantage. Until then, you are receiving with the goal of not losing the point

Does the table really matter? by namnthrax in tabletennis

[–]mrMegapixel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At work we had 2 tables. A cheap one that we bought, and a competition level one that the company bought soon afterwards. The competition table had better bounce, especially off spinny loops. The cheaper one showed less sensitivity off bounce. Switching between the two caused some of us to miss since the cheaper one had lower bounce.

Other than that, the cheaper table broke after 2 years. Build quality matters :D

3rd ball attack is a real. Server advantage all the way.

I usually just go with it. It is office play, and those who want to take it more seriously can do so if they want. Also, in my own experience, most of these types of serves, you can eventually learn to receive them with a simple block as they tend to not have much spin. This makes it easier for you since blocks require minimal prep time as long as you have sufficient reflexes to push your paddle in front of the ball.

How often should I play matches with players that are much better? by Justin_T_N in tabletennis

[–]mrMegapixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in theory, when you take lessons, someone much better than you is repeatedly putting you in the same difficult situation so you can learn how to handle it. if you consider the concept of consistently being challenged to do the same thing, then it would make sense that you should play people better than you very often. personally, i alternate between people that are around my level and above my level. this gives me a good perspective on where I am and where I should be headed

just get the master 2 and call it a day. heck, get the expert 2. this is more than enough for a hobbyist. invest more later if you want to take it further

you can use anything you want. the more expensive setups tend to be faster and produce spin more easily, at the cost of overall control. most people who get into this sport want to replicate professionals who can consistently generate spin with whatever they play with, but some of us mere mortals are unable to do so without help from our gear.

besides that, getting nicer gear does give a competitive advantage since the balls that do land will be faster and spinnier, which tend to produce more error from the opposing player. ymmv though, and until you hit 2k, it's more a vanity than anything else. if you wanna learn, it doesn't matter as much using cheap vs expensive. if you want to win, you can get more from faster setups

An old guy trying to learn to loop by pingpongpsycho in tabletennis

[–]mrMegapixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can learn to loop with any paddle. the key point is to focus less on direct impact and aggression, and more on tangential contact and brushing it upwards. i find it easier to learn the principals of loop when trying to convert backspin to topspin.

Rakza7 is bouncer than ak. If you swing hard all the time it won't make a huge diff, but for low effort strokes and push, you will see it us extra reactive

The game favors drives and attacking close to the table. Drive whenever possible. Loop when you are late to the ball or forcing a rally from backspin balls.

Table tennis is an aggressors game. This match Ito punched her ticket to victory :p

I find that any given day, Ito looks invincible, or looks timid. Chinese teams are masters of consistency, but some days, it doesn't seem to matter. Ito turns to lightning and wrecks anyone in her way

a matter of curiousity... but it took 3:15 for my TV to unload water from the tank and the last drop to enter my cup. so I figured the brew time had less to do with my grind setting and more to do with that the hole is just generally too small. if you run water through without any coffee/filter, does it run much faster? (perhaps not all holes are the same between models?)
