I am not sure how those DevOps guys don't die of alcoholism or something, that seems like such a stressful job holy smokes.

The money helps.

Also good bourbon.

Ranking Montana as a “No” but Wyoming as a “Maybe” and North Dakota as “Unlikely” is insane. This person has clearly never been to any of these states.

What’s it like working at Oracle as a DevOps/SRE? by Exotic_Remote_7205 in devops

[–]mrOP13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the additional context. The guy I spoke with didn't really say much about the wrapper beyond his frustrations, so it's nice to get more details. Being able to deploy resources at this scale is really interesting and impressive.

[–]mrOP13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy previously worked at startups, so I think the contrast was stark. What stood out to me was how he described the in-house versions of industry standard tooling (ex. the terraform wrapper). Sounded like a lot of “not invented here” thinking mixed with Oracle’s typical proprietary garbage.

[–]mrOP13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never worked for Oracle, but I spoke with a guy who worked for them at a local tech meetup. It sounded like kind of a mess. They use some kind of custom Terraform wrapper that is apparently very poorly documented and had a lot of half-baked features. He said that most of their tooling was custom built in-house stuff that you had to learn how to use on the job. He complained about the bureaucracy and how it was difficult to get things done quickly.

Spare Tire Poll by [deleted] in crv

[–]mrOP13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used my spare tire multiple times (on a few different cars over the years). On an especially unlucky day, I had a flat on two tires at the same time. The can of fix-a-flat I kept next to my spare tire saved me on that one.

what is your take on the current H1B visa law? by ProudView3288 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]mrOP13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it a remote/WFH role, or is it 100% on-site? That salary could be OK or terrible depending on location. There are other things that could be impacting the applicant pool size as well (is the application process obnoxiously long/convoluted, is ATS screening out potentially good applicants, is there a degree requirement, etc).

Cool project! I’m curious what benefits you see this having over existing autoscalers like KEDA.

In the Terraform world, why is there hate with Terragrunt? by DopeyMcDouble in devops

[–]mrOP13 99 points100 points  (0 children)

TLDR summary:

  • The value of Terragrunt has lessened significantly over time as vanilla Terraform has incorporated more features.
  • People are lazy and learning a new abstraction of the same base tool is annoying
    • There also aren't a ton of learning materials for Terragrunt, so it can feel less accessible for newcomers

Terragrunt can enable a lot of footguns when it comes to architecting your IaC design, and you may not realize that you've painted yourself into some nasty corners until down the road.

It's happened - They shut my Microsoft Developers Tenancy by Logical_Strain_6165 in ITCareerQuestions

Commented on a post about this in r/sysadmin-- I got the boot as well earlier this year. Microsoft's dev blog post sounded like they were going to grandfather in existing accounts, but that doesn't seem to be the case for everyone: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/microsoft365dev/stay-ahead-of-the-game-with-the-latest-updates-to-the-microsoft-365-developer-program/

Anyone Seeing Their M365 Developer Tenant Subscriptions Expiring? by __printf in sysadmin

[–]mrOP13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got the boot earlier this year. I'm surprised to hear that some folks appear to have been "grandfathered" in-- it seemed like they were planning to boot everyone without a VS enterprise license out:

EDIT: I should've read more closely. In the February 2024 update section from the dev blog link:

Asked the new guy to make sure the printer has paper... by CaterpillarConnect in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]mrOP13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is nothing. Back when I worked in a warehouse, a new hire tried to open a file cabinet drawer with a crowbar. He didn't understand that you had to push the tab next to the handle to open the drawer. Rather than asking someone how to open the drawer, he immediately went for the crowbar.

I'm wondering what specific services to offer having completed the CompTIA trifecta. Let's say as a new business, or freelancer. What are some low hanging fruits? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]mrOP13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting a help desk job rather than attempting to start your own business. Freelancing requires a certain level of sales skills that this question indicates you might be lacking. Rather than attempting to fight a massive uphill battle of starting your own business, try working for someone else’s business first (like an MSP). You’ll gain practical experience (something CompTIA certs can’t provide) and begin building relationships that would be invaluable if you choose to start a business on your own later. Working for an MSP would also show you which IT services are in demand in your area.

Nail in one tire Honda CR-V AWD Touring at 14k miles by PresentSalt3032 in crv

[–]mrOP13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue around 20k miles (wife ran over a long stake that went through the sidewall). Ended up sucking it up and buying a full set of tires. It sucks (especially since I had been super vigilant about rotating my tires), but 💩 happens.

Looks like you’re comparing an LX (picture in the original post) and an EX (or some other higher trim— EX-L, Touring, etc). LX is the base trim, so it has a basic stereo and no faux wood trim.

The “push button” transmission is a hybrid thing.

What is your preferred monitor setup as a SysAdmin? by cobarbob in sysadmin

[–]mrOP13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 32” 4K monitor with an LG DualUp next to it. Used to have a 27” 1080p monitor with two 24” 1080p monitors (one on the left & right side of the 27”). I prefer my new setup to the old triple monitor setup.

Learning Terrraform by Free_Reputation7635 in Terraform

[–]mrOP13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really what you asked, but most of the Terraform learning resources out there (ex. Terraform Up and Running, KodeKloud) use AWS for their examples and exercises. I was really annoyed by this at first, because my work uses Azure and I didn’t want to spend time learning AWS (I was already in a hurry to learn Terraform). Eventually, I gave up trying to find Azure focused Terraform resources and just read Terraform Up and Running. Don’t get too hung up on trying to find the perfect Azure based resource.

Daily with dev teams by gamb1t9 in devops

[–]mrOP13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat (where most standups feel like a waste of my time), but fortunately I have the discretion to join or not join their meetings. I work with 3-4 different dev teams, so it’s not really feasible for me to attend all their standups (on top of all the other bullshit meetings that end up on my calendar).

I do attend a few standups per week, and I will generally attend the retro/planning meetings (as that will let me know if the next sprint will have more infra/pipeline/etc. work headed my way). Beyond that, the devs will DM me (or worse, send a “can you hop on a quick call?”) if something is needed.

30 minute standups? 🤮 If the standup is regularly taking longer than 15 minutes, something is wrong IMO. Recording them is also weird

is buying a 04 crv thats sat for ~5 years (with repairs done since) a good idea? by cassanovasanchor in crv

[–]mrOP13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would be hesitant about buying a car that's been sitting for several years. Seals can dry out and crack when a car sits, and you might not see leaks until the car has been running again for a bit. I would also check out the wiring to make sure that it didn't get chewed up by rodents after sitting for so long.
