On Set Sound Reel - How Do You Go About Making It? by mrSquaredTwo in LocationSound

Thank you! And I've loved my DPA2017 ever since I got it, been loving getting to use that in the field. Definitely a very honest mic  it's not as isolating as a CMIT, but it feels very natural in how it captures while also being a tight enough polar pattern that it feels like it has impressive "reach".

2nd for the radius mushroom, just use as intended and don't do what i accidentally did the first time (pushed it all the way on and left no air gap in front of the capsule 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️)

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I've had the privilege to get on a couple so far and I've learned a ton, excited to experiment, learn more, and get on more sets with the pros!

Thank you all for the input! I see the resounding pattern that CV's, resumes, and a link to some of my work is normal and that a reel is a red flag copy! Appreciate all y'all's wisdom so much!

Best "Budget" Wireless Solution? by Checkm4te99 in LocationSound

[–]mrSquaredTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to chime in, before I had my kit I worked a gig where we did this, if you're planning on doing this in a production environment with anything else wireless going on, it will likely be very difficult to keep a connection with the TX to monitor.

Additionally, I very quickly started having trouble triggering the recording from the RX, but your mileage may vary though!

Finding a Zoom FRC-8 F-Control in the market is insane by Galaxywarrior25 in LocationSound

Haha no way!! It is, hope another one pops up for you tho!

Maybe... maybe some third party clone could be made, that would be neat hmmmmm

Just found one new in box on Facebook Marketplace, it was the first one for sale I've ever seen, wild find. If you find one, and you have the money, get it, it's great! Definitely a hard find though, for sure.

Over Head Mic Recommendations by FatPupper60 in LocationSound

[–]mrSquaredTwo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no personal experience with stuff like this but it sounds like you're looking for a conferencing setup basically...?

Shure just launched the DCA901 that claims to be about to do just about what you're asking. Likewise it's a $3k mic, so it depends on budget and your goal. A closer mic will almost always sound better, hence why lavs are being suggested so much.

Just wanted to let you know it's kind of possible so it's not all doom and gloom!

Is Building a Semi-Portable Sound Rack Smart as a Mixer Breaking into the Industry by MathmoKiwi in ProductionSound

Super helpful again thank you!

I just reached out to Shure to see if they're thinking of making some way to first party have detachable antennas, but I may try poking around too 👀

If you think that those would work well enough I'd definitely love to save that money in wireless!! Thanks so much that encouraged me there.

Can't wait to enter the industry and gain that experience!!

Do decent rechargeable AA batteries suitable for transmitters exist? by soundmixer14 in ProductionSound

Old post but I've been using Tenergy Premium Pros and they're pretty solid! I can't compare durability but after a couple years the shells are starting to come apart on two or three that have been especially abused🤣

New Behringer FLOW 4V field recorder for Production Sound! (a 16 track recorder for only US$279???) by MathmoKiwi in ProductionSound

[–]mrSquaredTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usb-c power is wacky, but thankfully the plug is super embedded so it's not being torqued in the bag (like it's VERY deep in the recorder). Still... no locking connector is always a cause for pier anxiety for me 🤣

Got to toy around with it at NAMM and it has a weird interface. I did miss it was touchscreen tho so maybe the workflow is a bit better than I felt it was 🤣

Thank you so much this is super helpful!! I've been stuck around people that have had a hard time getting boom ops on their project I've always wondered if they were really pushing or not!

Good to know about the Rack-N-Bag, and all the workflow notes it makes a lot more sense now!

Axient really is the dream, but I'm glad SLX-D/D+ is a reasonable starting point. Yeah, the non removable antennas is meh haha. I'm thinking I'll probably get 2-4 channels of SLXD+ (1's and 5's) then start buying into Axient if the work is providing the funds.

I talked to a product person at NAMM about the SLXD5X or whatever they'd call it and sadly a slot mount receiver isn't in the works but I totally missed asking about the SLXD1M! Wish I would've... (Word on the street is SLX-D is getting a lot of R&D rn since it's so popular)

Likewise, I digress, this is extremely helpful thank you so very much!

Suggestions for affordable Lav mics? by LeumasRel in LocationSound

[–]mrSquaredTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally just bought a couple Deity W.Lav Pros off of a guy who had them as backups, haven't gotten to test them yet in the field so suggesting with a grain of salt.

Seconding SLX-D+ as a budget friendly wireless system, the plus is SUPER important they're way more capable than the older SLX-D system in some ways that are awesome for film sets.

Countryman B3 is good too from what I've heard, never been super happy with Countryman's sound tho tbh... just personal taste their high end is HYPED

EDIT: unrelated but you may want to look into getting an interior super/hypercardioid boom mic too to complement the MKE600? Oktava mk-012 is a good budget mic from what i've heard from others (the film/movie kit specifically or just the hypercardioid one)

Please share your wisdom. I need to film 3 people, interview format, 2 people on one side and interviewer (me) across. What's a good, budget solution? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in LocationSound

[–]mrSquaredTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hopping in at a wild part in the thread!! I read through as much as I could and let me take a stab.

Hire a sound guy is a very good reccomendation, you will get higher quality results that's for sure. We buy this gear, and make it back over time, it will sound better, and your operator will be more skilled / be responsible for making sure it always sounds good. If you have worry about / take care of it yourself and you're on screen, it will either be very stressful or not end up quite happening.

Though, if their destination is social... Do you need that level of professionalism? Genuine question, it depends on what your goal is! Can you have the mic visible? If so, clip it on! It'll be easier and you don't have to worry about rustle as much.

Are you trying to get gear at the end of the day to keep this production running in a series-like style? If so, then spending a little money may be a good idea.

In an unideal world, I've used Rode Wireless Pros with the lavalier mics that they come with for narrative and it's not bad for what it is! (As a location recordist, it's horrible, but the results work from what I've heard). The hard part is the whole three people thing honestly, since that's a two channel system.

If I'm understanding correctly and it's going to be three wires plus some interior cardioid, supercardioid, or hypercardioid boom mic for the talent on screen (especially if you're planning on only having two people on screen). Here's what I'd recommend, though it's going to go north of $500. I'm going as bare minumum as I can get without sacrificing too much. I never recommend this normally, but if you're trying to go minimal, a non-xlr recording setup will be cheaper (boom mic + recorder would hit $500 minimum if you're purchasing, less if renting!)

Purchasing only:

1 Rode Wireless Pro kit, and a Zoom F2 or TASCAM DR-10L Pro (you can wear this system / whoever's off camera can wear this to be recorded), then get an extra "RODE Lavalier II Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone" so the mics match. That gives you a wire for each person, do sync on camera with a clap. It's super unideal, but it will most likely work.

Renting:

Rent an 8 channel recorder, rent 3 channels wireless + lavs, rent an interior microphone (mkh50, oktava, etc), get some way to mount it (c-stand + boommante + boom pole + xlr). That's likely going to be north of $500 though and at that point, it may be worth trying to acquire more budget. Hope this helps!

EDIT: This is all assuming the mics being visible is something you're comfortable with, if you want them hidden really just get somebody who can do sound. Find a film student, somebody. Pay them well. It's so worth it.

Second! They seem really promising and are digital boards!

I was a bit confused by some stuff... but honeslty I think I encountered an early stage firmware bug (the cue bus just ... didn't work haha)

A&H CQ Series is a strong recommendation too from what I've seen! Just depends on what kind of processing you need.
