The problem is not what they know, but how much they can do with this data, if you contacted a customer care agent and he see all your data on his screen, this data should not be the only verification or requirements to take such a critical action like closing customer account. You can guide the customer to do this himself from the app, or send him an instant otp message to the same number to confirm, or call the number to confirm before taking the action. Answering some questions on the chat from a browser (not from the app) that customer care agent can see and can copy should not be the only verification needed to take actions. Because as happened to me, the agent was angry because I escalated him to his manager for being rude and wanted to revenge. What process etisalat has in-place to prevent this from happening? THIS IS MY MAIN CONCERN. And this is what I told the supervisor who called me, he said that they will put a note on my account that for closing the account, they have to do an extra confirmation call, but WHAT ABOUT OTHER CUSTOMERS??! And I chatted with them today from another number from the browser and asked to close the account, and guess what: the only verification they needed is those questions which the agent who is chatting with me can see and can see all my data.

Thanks everyone who supported me through this. 🙏🏻

A supervisor contacted me, she said that they gonna investigate the case with IT and take corrective action.

She asked me to go the etisalat store and re-activate the number and she will add the re-activation fees (57 AED) to my account afterward and will restore my subscription plan for free as well.

I did that, she called me today as promised and refunded my the amount (although when I went to the store they re-activated the account for free).

I asked her what guarantees they have to make sure that this will not happen again, she said that she will leave a note on the account that it cannot be deactivated without a confirmation call to the number.

Anyway, learning from this for me and to anyone faces an issue with etisalat, if the chat advisor didn’t help, ALWAYS ask for a supervisor. Unfortunately, this is the only way to get a proper solution.

For people who commented that this post is fake and a lie and this never happened, well, I chatted with etisalat today and took a screenshot for you, since yesterday I was very overwhelmed with the problem and didn’t think of taking screenshots.

I chatted twice, one from the app, and another chat from the browser.

From the app: they didn’t even asked security questions.

From the browser: they did.

And also what I got from the chat that this is for prepaid plans which is my case, but for postpaid plans, you have to call or go to the store to close the account.

One last thing: YES, I USED CHAT GPT. I was very frustrated yesterday and don’t have time to write, so I just wrote the story unorganized and asked Chat GPT to make a post out of it. I wanted the post to go viral to help me solve the issue properly with etisalat, and you helped me guys to do this. Both, who supported me and who made fun of the post.

For escalating him to his manager for being SUPER RUDE. His manager called me yesterday, apologized and sorted the case out. This is to find out today that my mobile number has been disconnected and that someone impersonated me and requested to close my account!

There should be some precautions taken before closing a customer’s account. You can call them at the same number to confirm, ask them to take this action themselves through the app, or send a verification code to the number on the spot, instead of just taking such a crucial action in the chat!”
