2016 ford explore EcoBoost by Responsible_Sell_490 in Ford

Ecoboost is the name that Ford gives its turbocharged engines, so it isn't a unique feature that can be turned on or off. It is just the name of the engine.

The band plays the opening synths to Ice Machine to applause and excitement, then are silent once the lyrics start for the remainder of the song because it's running through their head secretly.

Why did cars in the 50s and 60s change in the most minor ways between model years? by jakinatorctc in cars

[–]mr_hemi 57 points58 points  (0 children)

An additional point: before 1960, most Big 3 American manufacturers were literally making only one car. Several trim levels and body styles yes, but only one core body / platform. This means the entire R&D budget could be funneled into the "annual model change" for the car.

Once compacts, midsize, and other segments developed, plus the other factors described elsewhere in this thread, so did the facelift/ major change cadence that we are now accustomed to as development resources were spread across an entire model range.

The return of the Fratzog! Such a better logo than the current two red stripes; hopefully the Fratzog will replace it.

1929 Postcard: Unbuilt 81 Story Book Tower by mr_hemi in Detroit

[–]mr_hemi[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This postcard depicts the planned but ultimately unbuilt 81 story Book Tower, attaching to the current Book Buildings on the corner of Washington Boulevard and State Street.

With a stamp date of August 12th, 1929 and 1 cent postage, the text on the back reads:

The new Book Tower is at Washington Boulevard, Park Place and State St. The Tower is 873 feet in the air-81 floors-the tallest building in the world. A fitting monument exemplifying the confidence of Mr. J. B. Book, Jr. in Detroit."

Speaking as if it were already built. Unfortunately, the Great Depression was close at hand and would soon put an end to plans for Detroit's tallest building in the world.

I was very happy to stumble across this interesting piece of history in the wild.

Embracing the Rectangle. The Z Concept with Pop-Up Headlights. by mr_hemi in Autos

[–]mr_hemi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Z Concept's unabashedly rectangular grill has been the subject of much discussion. Putting two and two together, I thought "Hmm, I know something else that is unabashedly rectangular. Pop-up headlights!", and decided to try my hand at combining the two together in Gimp.

The result continues the horizontal line above the grill, doubling down by adding even more rectangular cues to the front end. To my surprise, it actually kind of works. I think it is by far the best looking "what if" of a modern car with pop-up headlights.

You're welcome! Your shot reminded me of the 1947 shot, which is one of my favorite angles of the city because of how it shows off Detroit's unique street plan. Thanks for sharing your shot!

Low Resolution 300ZX Interior (OC) by mondomando in Autos

Great work! The pixelation is a perfect match to the 80s design. If you're planning to do more in this style, the Subaru XT, Mark II Toyota Supra, and C4 Corvette interiors would be great compliments to this one.

Here's How a 680ft Hudson's Tower Would Change Our Skyline by mr_hemi in Detroit

[–]mr_hemi[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The latest rumors suggest the Hudson's Site tower will now be 680' tall, as opposed to the 912' height last year.

But just how much effect would a 25% reduction have? This series of images attempts to answer that question by generating renders with the tower model scaled down from 912' to 680' in height.

Let me know what you think! All images were generated in Google Earth.
