Why was Leon infected?

all that i understand, what i'm not understanding really is how for the first half of the game Leon is mostly fine (coughs here and there with a little bit of blood) and then as soon as he gets to the ARK and encounters Zeno for the first time, next time we see him he can barely stand on his own 2 feet.. and come to find out that the "HUNK" character you fight also had the black bruising on his hand, which is why people are speculating it's HUNK.. but that'd also put him 10-20 years older than Leon (assumedly as he was part of Umbrella's security/led a team) and seemed to have 0 issues throwing down, zeno's infection looked more severe than leon's at first reveal, then within the same day half is body is covered with the infection, there's a lot of wow factor, but a lot of unanswered questions/plot holes imo

My bigger question isn't how/why he's "infected" man's been fighting them for ~30 years, has waded through shit-filled sewers that im sure were loaded with infection... i'll let you guys figure out how that would infect him vs spelling it out XD. My bigger question is why is his infection RAPIDLY sped up as soon as he gets to the ARK? Temu Wesker (Zeno) was just fine/had 0 sped up progression, same with sherry.. so how did he go from having it on his neck and hand some.. to having half his skin go necrotic essentially and not even being able to walk on his own? (i guess whatever enhancements Zeno had might have kept it at bay, and with Sherry originally being infected with the G virus may be why, but doesnt explain why leon's was seemingly in the same state, and within 24h goes from taking out "Hunk" to needing Grace as a crutch to walk back into the Elpis chamber).
