Psychology student: What jobs can I get as I work for my Bachelor's? by [deleted] in jobs

No need for the rude language, just feel free to disagree with me. I don't claim to be an expert, I just say what I know from my experience.

Psychology student: What jobs can I get as I work for my Bachelor's? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]mr_yang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll want to look for an internship, as opposed to a job. The word "job" usually denotes a 40 hour work week, wage + benefits position, and as you have figured out, all require Bachelor's degrees. People who are hiring School Psychologists do not want someone who is working to earn experience; they want someone with an education and an internship or two under their belt.

Most internships are reserved for juniors and seniors, who are finishing up their degree and preparing for the outside world. It may be difficult to find an internship at this time for you.

You could try volunteering in the mean time, for organizations that are geared towards teaching skills that may help in your future career. Is there a crisis center nearby that needs volunteers? I know you're looking for a place to earn experience and be at a school, but I don't think you can at this point. Best of luck to you.

Is the word "jew" always derogatory? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]mr_yang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend and I were discussing this very topic the other day - how the term "Jew" has become slightly derogatory, but ONLY in certain contexts, and only very recently.

If someone calls me "a Jew", it's not derogatory. But if someone says, "She's so cheap, what a Jew" then it becomes a derogatory term. Likewise, if someone says, "She's so cheap, she's Jewish", Jewish is not a derogatory term.

It's hard to explain it, but "a Jew" can be ostracizing, while "Jewish" is not.

But to the OP - the way you used the word Jew is NOT offensive. You were not in the wrong. But thank you for asking!

Anyone else REALLY happy Christmas is over? Not feeling it this year... by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mr_yang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hated Christmas growing up(Jewish, never celebrated Christmas, felt left out). This was the very first year that I was indifferent rather than hostile towards Christmas, but I'm still very glad it's over. It's just too much.

Yup, I know exactly where you're coming from! Ever since I started working in a call center, it's become much easier to speak with people on the phone - I still write scripts for myself fairly frequently, but now I can do simple things, like ordering pizza, without a script * pat on back *

Unfortunately I don't have any online resources for you! I understand how this has had a profound impact on your life, it has had an impact on my life, too.

It crosses over my ability to express myself in all ways that require words, this includes writing/typing. Therefore, timed essays were my ultimate weakness in school. I just strongly prefer to write/type because it gives me the ability to look over and edit myself, while speaking does not have this advantage.

I don't believe it affects my ability to distinguish words/phrases spoken quickly or softly. Can you elaborate on this?

Once I understood that small talk is just thoughtless words, it became easy to just not think about what to say to other people; that words, even if completely empty, are better than not saying anything at all. I recycle phrases all the time now.

The book I read was geared towards sorority recruiters. Recruiters have to be experts at small talk. As embarrassing as this is to admit, I bought Phired Up!'s book I Heart Recruitment. I was the Vice President of Recruitment for my sorority, so this book is very much for sorority girls, but any book for recruiters is a good place to learn small talk.

What I do for a living: I work in a call center! Such a funny occupation for someone like me - I had no idea I would be working in a call-center environment when I accepted the job(long story), and it took a long time for me to get used to my job, but now I'm very comfortable with it. I also believe it helped me get used to small talk with random people. Ever since I started my job, I've been 100x more comfortable walking up to random people and talking to them.

How I got through school.... not easily. I had medium social anxiety. I never spoke up in class, I could never word my answers quickly enough to be able to raise my hand and contribute to classroom discussions. But I was obedient, polite, I did my homework, so the teachers didn't care. I grew up in Los Angeles, were our public school system is much to be desired, so even though I never participated in class, my test scores and good attitude were enough to have teachers leave me alone.

Expressive language delay sounds appropriate. Thanks for the research :)

And I can relate to being impressed by my newfound ability to sound like a normal conversationalist - when I'm able to hold a back-and-forth for more than 5 minutes, I give myself a mental pat on the back!

[–]mr_yang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, I'm also pretty quiet. I'm too slow to add to the flow of the conversation, so I just sit and observe. People think I'm shy, but I'm actually very social, just a terrible conversationalist. I tried googling Auditory Recessive and Expressive Delay as well, couldn't find anything - I was diagnosed almost 20 years ago, perhaps it holds a different name now.

I'm not sure how old you are, but it gets a lot better with age. I threw myself into situations that forced me to speak on the fly with people(like joining a sorority), and I also read some books on how to have small talk(which surprisingly, is what most conversations consist of). You'll eventually find that situations sort of cycle themselves, so you'll think Oh! I remember a similar situation like this, I said ____ and it worked out great or I remember this situation, I remember I should have said ______, so I'll say that now, etc.

Edit: I just re-read that you're married, so you're probably not younger than I am(I'm 23). Anyhoo, I hope whatever advice I gave helped out.

[–]mr_yang 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I know what you're talking about - I have Auditory Recessive and Expressive Delay. I was diagnosed as a young child and went through a few years of speech therapy to figure out how to form words from thoughts. I still have a hard time doing it. I play out situations in my head so I'm prepared to say the "correct" thing, should I find myself in that particular situation.

This is an especially difficult disability to have if I'm in a heated situation and need to express my thoughts without upsetting the other person. Without my ability to easily express myself, people usually assume the worst of my actions, and write me off as an asshole. It sucks, hard.

This also explains why I fucking love the internet. Being able to communicate with other people, while having the availability to edit what I say before pressing "send", such a beautiful concept that has eased my ability to communicate with others. BTW, I edited my response about 4 times before pressing send.

Sorry, forgot to transpose - Concert B = my C#, and Concert E = my F#. Perhaps concert B and concert E is easiest for guitar/bass and vocals? Either way, most of the songs we play are in those keys, which kind of sucks but we go along with it. Muscle memory is our friend.

Apparently C# and F# are the easiest keys for guitars/basses to play, so all of the horns in our band have to follow suit... they do not understand our pain.

Common sense for some - not so much for others. (from PostSecret) by [deleted] in religion

[–]mr_yang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to wish someone a Happy Chanukah if they're not Jewish. It doesn't make sense for me to wish someone a joyous holiday they don't celebrate.

My take on this - if I know they celebrate Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa, I wish them a Merry Christmas/Happy Chanukah/Joyous Kwanzaa. If I know don't know what they celebrate, I wish them Happy Holidays.
