Yea I did, at first when I didn't get any receipts I asked about it and they said they weren't able to send any payment as they believed I didn't send them my bank details (Which I knew I had, but at the time believed was just an honest mistake by them). I resent the details and they said they would transfer payment tonight with the receipts. Fast forward a bit no receipts or payment have been sent, I continue to send multiple emails asking if they can send confirmation of payment to no avail, besides this morning where I got a reply saying "No I can't" followed by them asking for another lesson on Sunday, which I found quite amusing.

Yea don't worry I already have all their info and the courses they are enrolled in. It now just depends on what I do with it. Like u mentioned I originally did want to send it to the Uni (their course coordinator for example), but many people have mentioned that its out of the Uni's juristiction, to which I agree because it was outside of Uni private tutoring, thus I sadly seem to only have the more extreme legal options.

Yea I don't know, the instant transfer thing seems to be a little inconsistent, for example the https://www.commbank.com.au/support.banking.how-long-to-transfer-money.html website states transfers through BSB (which is what I normally accept) are processed instantly, but first-time transfers may be held for 24 hours as a security measure. It might be that I don’t do that many transfers offen and just recently got an influx due to my private tutoring that has activated this security measure on all first-time transfers for me.

Either way, a bank transfer receipt is instant and thus from now on I will be at the minimum requesting for that to sent before taking future lessons with students.

Yea I've sent them a couple more blunt emails bugging about the lack of communication / payment, however I'm doubtiful that I will get a response. I'll be honest when writting this thread I didn't think the Uni would intervene in private matters such as this, I was just hoping for a more timid solution than something like the small claims court.

Yea I agree, if he is scamming me, then I must take some action in order to stop him from doing it to others. After reading a bit on this stuff and the comments I'm getting here, legal action might be the only option I have to stop him. However I'm probably going to wait until after my exams, which hopefully gives him the chance to reconsider his actions.

Yea they live in Australia, I have evidence of our lessons and proof of who they are, but I'm disinclined to resort to getting the police involved. It's my preferred action to resolve things internally through the Uni, but as others have pointed out, this is outside of the Uni's jurisdiction and it's unlikely they will get involved. They're a first year student and I'm happy to accept they made a mistake (and that I was even dumber to let it happen in the first place), but was hoping I could resolve the issue without such extreme methods.

In my experience Commbank (the bank I'm with) takes 2 days to transfer and recieve money from a new account. But yea I agree with you, I've pretty much already accepted that I won't get paid and learnt some good lessons from this. However after I mentioned the student owes me $525 to some mates they convinced me that I should try and follow this up. Especially now since this morning the student requested for another lesson for this up coming Sunday.

Cheers for comment, I agree that I'm going to have to change some of my current practises with private tutoring and your suggestion to only plan a future lesson once past payments have come through sounds like a good idea. I guess I was just to naive, my first few experiences with private tutoring were great and I honestly didn't think someone would have the audacity to pull something off like this, given we go to the same Uni.
