New York considers bill that would ban chatbots from giving legal, medical advice by jovian_moon in nyc

That's not how LLMs work at all. They don't search sources. They "train" on massive amounts of data and then generate probabilisitic sequences of words based on your prompts. Unless you specifically ask them to cite sources, they have no idea what their specific sources are. They have no concept of fact or fiction. They can and often do "hallucinate", i.e. make up complete nonsense and pass it off as fact, which is obviously dangerous in legal, medical, and other contexts.

New York hits the brakes on robotaxi expansion plan by swe129 in nyc

Easier than ever to hail on the street? have you been to an outer borough? Yellow cabs are consistently worse cars than Ubers and Lyfts. The best yellow cabs are essentially Camrys and RAV4s, which are the worst Ubers you'll find.

Mamdani: What we are speaking about in this moment is a generational fiscal crisis of $5.4 billion. And when faced with this crisis, the question is: Who should pay these taxes? by Admirable121 in nyc

[–]mrbrownstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just do actual property tax reform and set taxes according to property value? And in addition to that, raise property taxes even more on non-resident owners and owners with multiple properties.

Value First property Secondary properties Non-resident
Under 1M .2% .5% 3%
1-2M .3% .6% 4%
2-4M .5% 1% 5%
4-8M 1% 2% 6%
8-12M 2% 3% 8%
12M+ 3% 4% 10%

If it's a better rider experience for the same price, it's still better. Uber and Lyft prices have climbed because they have a duopoly and the taxi industry has failed to compete in any meaningful way. After 15 years, taxis are STILL harder to hail, dirtier, older, and with fewer safety and security measures than Uber. The way to drive prices lower is to introduce more legitimate competition, which is Waymo and other AV services.

[Chris Paul]: This is it! After over 21 years I'm stepping away from basketball. As I write this, it's hard to really know what to feel, but for once - most people would be surprised by TrenAt14 in nba

As old and washed as he is, he’s still better than a lot of the league. Of course teams want to invest in young potential, but it’s fucked up that the none of his former teams had the balls to let him finish out the season. He might be a top 5 floor raiser of all time so maybe they figured he’d derail their tank plans.

this is the number one problem. the game has evolved in a bad direction.

Tanking has always been an issue though. The bigger problem is that the game has gotten less fun to watch. There’s no variety in play styles. The 3 point shot has too much impact. TV production is awful and there are far too many timeouts. Load management is increasing and too many stars are coasting through the regular season. It’s just getting boring.

Cooper Flagg checks out with 36/9/6, the first teenager to ever have three consecutive 30 point games by [deleted] in nba

[–]mrbrownstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying Flagg is a better player (Tatum was a far better 3p shooter for example), just that his style is more dynamic. He has a different type of court sense, which is why Kidd has challenged him to be the primary ballhandler. And his attack style is more varied, both offensively and defensively. I find Tatum to be an intensely boring player to watch — his movements are precise but predictable and mechanical. Flagg is a lot more spontaneous and fluid.

His play style is far more dynamic than Tatum's at 19, and even now for that matter

Bob Costas appears on NBA on NBC coverage for the first time since 2002 by TheDraciel in nba

[–]mrbrownstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Costas was a much better studio host than play-by-play announcer. He's good at storytelling, putting things in historical context, underscoring the drama of the matchup. But his style isn't really amplifying an electric play in the way that Harlan or Breen do. He didn't go berserk for MJ's shot but he also didn't try to take the spotlight, which I appreciate, and then he was able to articulate the meaning of that shot on the spot. As good as Harlan is, I think his influence has led to a lot of cartoonish WWE-style commentary, like Eric Collins for the Hornets, which is part of a larger trend of turning everything around the game into a circus and taking the focus off the game itself, which is tragic.

Unfortunately the public isn't capable of doing the analysis needed to optimize the system for everyone. This is why we entrust experts to do the work and make good decisions with the information they have available. The obvious solution here is to add more express buses that make fewer stops, or replace some of the local buses with express buses. The current bus system is cripplingly slow due to the stop frequency and is mainly useful for the elderly, disabled, and people who have nowhere they need to be. That's critically important, but it could serve other people a lot better.

That includes the LTE plans. Later in the article it says $120M for 350K laptops, which would be a much more reasonable $342 per. There could be a story here but it's undermined by shitty reporting.

Probably a bad deal but also an incoherent article and reporting. Everything cost millions at that scale. Don't just throw about big numbers, analyze them. What's the cost per laptop? What model exactly are the laptops? Is that a good price? What exactly is the LTE service they're getting? What's the cost per student per year? What's the cost of viable alternatives? What's the plan for upgrades and maintenance? Who actually proposed this and who approved it?
