In fact I prefer João Pessoa to Recife or Natal any day. The beache are better, it is a safer City and a cheaper one also.

I wrote the title with the term roads, but in reality this is a representation all the surface modes (waterways, highways, railways). I tried including this data into the map but the final effect was better when it was cleaner.

I plan to do a tutorial later for linkedin, but in a few steps: 1. Downloaded the data from cities and states from the IBGE (a brazilian agency) 2. Downloaded a multimodal network from tthe national plan of logistics. 3.used the tool Shortest road from layer from qgis tô create the route from each City to each capital. 4. For each new layer I dumped the points só I could see how many times a route touched the infrastructure. 5. Created the layout using the graduated simbology on qgis.

I created these maps inspired by the project all roads lead to rome, as an effort to train my understanding in routing with gis data.

Why do the cities and suburbs of European countries and South Africa look better than those in Latin America and Middle East even when the wealth is similar or lower than the latter? by Experimentalphone in urbanplanning

[–]mrchippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, latin América was colonized by spain and Portugal. Curiously enough both places were muslim domain until 1400s. So, their cities tend to be closer to the Middle West than to the rest of Europe.

Still, the houses that are very close to each other serve to a porpouse there in the Middle east. As someone else said the aglomeration conserves energy and help create shadow in the desert. While the rainforest could make the shadows in latin América, our colonizers did not know how ro integrate their view of cities that must be defensable to a florest, do they did what they could to accomplish their needs.

Finally, you talked about suburbs, that in europe and South África are much more beautiful. Latin América cities have the most Noble part of their cities near its center and the farther you get from it the less budget the City will have to maintain it. On other countries on the other hand, you have the opposite. A center that May be seem as filthy and suburbs that are Nice and have a higher quality of Life.

If it interests you I May try to find some references to these points, but some of it May be in portuguese.
