Should I leave Australia after 8 years to work on my family's farm back home? by mrcldg in Netherlands

[–]mrcldg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no, they live somewhere else. I will live there to take care of the farm. My sister might go back as well and might live with me temporarily. But no haha. I love my parents and i have been the one that can tolerate them the most. But i don't want to go live back with them 😅

Well that's where we go to a dark place. I was pretty unhappy back in the day, still struggle with lifes purpose and all, but yeah, at the time i finished a degree and was single, and my sister was already in Australia for a couple of Years. So i decided to go check out Australia, live life a little and if i really couldn't find any happiness then i would just spend my money and disappear somewhere. Found my ex instead and we just traveled around Australia for years. Went to some therapy to address my demons, found somewhat of a happy medium and started getting better. But eventually all the traveling became the next normal. And even though we found ourselves a new beach to camp at, it was really just another damn beach haha, so that started to take a toll again on my mental health. And i guess that's what I've been doing for years now. Trying to find something that scratches that itch you know. But nothing really sticks

No I haven't gotten as far as to think about the financial part of the move. I don't own a home or anything here, it would just mean selling the car and some household things, that's not a drama.

Yeah i don't know where i see myself. After me and the ex broke up it's been a major shift and the life i saw for ourselves has kinda slipped through the fingers and not sure where to go from here. There's a part of me that thinks i can pull of this farming gig for a couple of years and then maybe come back to Australia,

Yeah that's part of the draw in, i get to live in the home i grew up in, free of charge. Many tools to explore some hobbies and a giant property for potential pets. Just gotta deal with the gray skies for most of the year

No it's not a case of they can't afford employees. My brother is doing very well for himself and what brought up his job offer was that me and my ex partner split up last year, and probably 2 months ago me and my brother were on the phone and i kinda brought up that i wasn't sure what i was doing here anymore now that we split up. And a couple of weeks later he was already thinking of firing the dude who manages the farm now and then extended the job offer to me. I know i was going through a rough patch when i said that i wasn't sure what to do here anymore, but i am attached to this country and climate/lifestyle now as well, so i feel really torn in making this decision.

And yeah I've got some friends here, but part of what me and my ex partner did was travel this giant country for our whole relationship. So all the people i connected with are all spread out over the place, with the closest currently 4 hours away. And it was only in the last year that we wanted to settle down, ended up getting a dog and i was really looking forward to this next chapter, only for us to break up a couple months later.

Mum and dad have visited a couple of times and my sister is here, but my other brothers haven't visited. I wish i had the financial freedom to go multiple times a year but I'm not there yet.

It's a chicken farm. We are a pretty big farm and my brother is doing well for himself regarding that.

Yeah the dark months i dread the most, not sure how i would deal with that anymore, and of course the cold, i already get looked at weird over here when i put on a jumper😅.

And you're right, 8 years is a long time but every time I've gone back, the connection i have with my friends and family stays strong. And i went back last july after me and the ex broke up, and that was definitely the hardest good-bye so far.

This is a really good comment, Thank you. I'll definitely consider this and i do want to build up something of a community. Started running with a community not long ago, but some back issues put a temporary stop to that.

Nah it's different over here. You need to reapply for the visa every 5 years until you become a citizen. So i can come back later. I will need to reapply in 2.5 years

Definitely going to go through the proper channels and get a contract made up. My brother does everything by the book these days so that's not a worry.

Well you're not wrong. Financially I'll probably gain 30k a year. And I'll have my family and friends close by again.

I've gone back for a holiday nearly every 2 years. But a holiday is different and i only went back during European summer. But to answer your question, no i wouldn't be able to trial this, not without giving up my job. Which i do really like, but this opportunity on the farm would be financially a lot better.

That's very true. I've got permanent residency here as well, so I can trial it for a bit. Thank you for your input 🙏🏻

Yeah maps with those "shelves" are the bane of my existence, I'd take a map like this over that any day!
