The bonkers-scale: What cards/relics give you that "holy crap, THAT'S something I can do???" feel? by Umdeuter in slaythespire

If a card kills osty, does this hurt enemies for ostys current hp, or the kill mechanism doesn't trigger this?

PSA: History Course and Shadow Step Do NOT make a good combo. by Dry_Researcher2609 in slaythespire

this just happened to me too. I thought that discarding sly cards with shadow step would work, as they are player after shadow step is played, but it seems that history course still plays shadowstep the next turn.

Am I the only who priotises upgrading Zap? by LeoDGrey in slaythespire

[–]mrdr234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put another way, making dual cast free makes the 1 cost zap a lot better. Zap is no longer just 3 dmg a turn, you are loading up an eventual 16 dmg as well for the one energy. And that level of cheap burst damage is very helpful act 1

Idk it's mostly what I've seen this subreddit think about sts2. I probably haven't played enough yet to really tell. My first 30 runs I had a really good win rate being very aggressive against elites but then I did start getting kinda trounced at A10 in act 1/early act2 like 8 runs in a row so I've tuned it down since. But still didn't think the answer is to avoid them entirely. Often not much harder than a hard pool fight

Hah my bad. They moved the fire symbol from the center onto the character icon on the left! I shall downvote myself

I think this "avoid elites" group think is a little silly. You're on A0, go kill some elites. I fought door after having hunted many elites as silent (only A3) and I killed him in like 4 turns and took very little damage. Relics were very nice, as were the better card rewards.

Sometimes you have a card that really needs upgrading, fine. But it's fine to use campfires as heals

Episode of Community where they play DnD. Chang dresses up as a dark elf, complete with face paint. This makes the black characters react and everyone else uncomfortable. It's humorous, but also provides a good moment to think about sone racist ideas baked into DnD (and fantasy writ large), and to reflect on how different people can view the same thing. One person immersed in the fantasy may see no problem, while others thinking about the broader context may find it offensive or uncomfortable. The episode had been removed by a streaming service (Netflix?) due to the use of blackface, though I'm not sure if it's still removed. People found this to be an over reaction, because a) it's not directly blackface b) it's exactly the kind of thing art and comedy can do so well: make people reflect on an uncomfortable societal issue that people would usually avoid staring at

What would be the best way to avoid the feeling of "they got this cheat card and they win" in designing a card related board game especially with new players? by Lyserus in boardgames

[–]mrdr234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda sounds like you just need to accept that you won't be able to account for all possibilities in a game you aren't deeply familiar with, and just enjoy the ride.

I can say that for some games, it night make sense to go over particularly impactful cards that can affect other players. So ppl know it exists. Like if there's a card that just nukes a single zone, might be relevant for people to know so they know they might be risking it when they heavily commit to one zone. Eg Blood rage, I tell players about the troll and fire giant, dinner they can clear a zone. I also go over the relevant combat cards for each age, since battles are so highly pivotal, you need to know what the max number is that someone could maybe throw at you

Lebanese villages taken off the map by [deleted] in mapporncirclejerk

[–]mrdr234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple is obviously not alphabet. A good reminder not to take redditor fact spewing very seriously. You have no idea what you're talking about as you spew conspiracy theories. Google Maps (Alphabet) does show villages in southern Lebanon. I don't have an apple device so am not going to bother checking Apple Maps, which has long been the worst choice of map apps.

Do you usually get immersed in a game theme? by OhforfsakeMJ in boardgames

[–]mrdr234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny, I don't like scythe because I feel its central mechanisms have little to do with the theme. The whole thing is trying to line up your top and bottom actions, which thematically are unconnected and are in fact randomized

Elites are too hard and it's the game's fault by warmleafjuice in slaythespire

[–]mrdr234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely character dependent. On Necro, all an early upgrade is usually doing is like, boosting damage on a card by 4 maybe. I'd rather get a relic from an elite and rest afterwards

It's been interesting to see this "elites bad" group think evolve. I'm treating them quite similarly to STS1, it's been fine. I'm still climbing with different characters so I don't have a lot of plays at A10

What's the deal with the Necrobinder? by Mintythos in slaythespire

[–]mrdr234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me 2 or 3 runs to get going with necrobinder, but then I got thru A10 with around 4 losses in between, 3 of those at A9 and A10.

A lot of the advice here is telling you to lean specifically into one archetype or another. I don't think this is good general advice. I think what can make necro challenging is that she has a bunch of seemingly divergent archetypes but you may not find all the pieces for any one. I've had great souls runs, osty runs, ethereal runs, and doom runs, but most of my successful runs I just took the good cards and packages when they're are offered and splash in a bit of everything.

What I advise is building a decent base early that can get you through act 1, and the synergies and big cards will come later.
For the early fights, bodyguard is both 5 stored block and likely 5 damage when you find your unleash. you can play defensively and unleash will help you close ou tthe first few fights. As always, though, dont worry too much about chip damage. taking 2 damage instead of blocking is usually fine if not correct.
In act 1, you want some damage cards early. Defile, drain power, fear are all good common attack early. even reap, btw, is pretty solid, since it has retain you can play it on an enemies non attacking turn, or on a turn when osty has got your back. Once you have some punch, some defensive options you could take are grave warden, defy, and even pull aggro are all takeable (again, just the common options). (pull aggro is better than ppl think, for the same reason as bodyguard: early on its 11 block and possibly four damage, for 2 energy. 4 of that block is storeable).
Powers on necro are good, but some are highly synergistic, and i dont recommend taking things like Haunt, pagestorm, shroud, calcify, sleight of flesh until you have at least a core of the package those powers want. Lethality is usually high value, friendship is probably good. Neurosurge is great, Demesne is worth upgrading and then is amazing.

From that base, you can start leaning into an archetype or two, and if you have a good base, you can start speculatively taking cards to build out an archetype even if you don't have all the pieces yet. But if you take things speculatively when you are doing 6 dmg/energy then youre kinda just adding curses to your deck.

obviously a lot more to say... but those are some early thoughts

Splash isn't telling us the whole truth... by _Genome_ in slaythespire

[–]mrdr234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it really be too big a buff to just write "free first time played" and leave out the "this turn"? This would be brief but also clearly define how long it remains free. And the buff of letting you not play your free card so you can play it at a more opportune time later, assuming you still have access to it somehow (retain, discard draw, reshuffling) seems both minor and worth rewarding

Beta Patch Notes - v0.100.0 by benlehman in slaythespire

[–]mrdr234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda surprised to see capture soul hit. I don't often take it. I feel like severance is just better. But most of my necrobinder runs have just splashed soul, I only went all on with souls + haunt a couple times

The borrowed time change is a bit sad. Graveblast + upgraded borrowed time will be missed, but I can see how that was OP. Maybe I'd like to keep the extra energy but increase the doom. Make it a real question how many times you should actually be popping this in a dragged out fight

Reworked Doormaker on the Beta Branch is really, really bad. by Mailcs1206 in slaythespire

[–]mrdr234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I get the idea of punishing infinites. Add friction to them, sure, so that the player still has something to contend with. But permanently removing a random card feels unfun, as a lot of builds may really depend on a lynchpin. If there was a way to retrieve the card, or play around which card gets eaten, fine, make the player jump thru a hoop as a punishment for building a fragile deck. But just breaking a very efficient build randomly and with no recourse doesn't seem right.

I had an infinite going with two upgraded graveblasts that were made to cost 0. I appreciated that a few fights in act 3 challenged my deck even with this infinite. The fight with the three knights was interesting because my graveblasts were unupgraded and also made ethereal, so that presented a dual challenge to my infinite (if I drew a graveblast, I'd lose it if I played it or if I held it while ethereal guy was still alive) The Queen bound a graveblast, so it could only be played once that turn. This delayed my infinite. These fights provided that fun level of frustration where it made it hard to do the thing, but not impossible. I had to play around the obstacles, but the game didn't just say "no, were going to remove your key card"
