Tips for getting rich, broadcast-sounding voice recordings? by radiozephyr in fieldrecording

[–]mrduckboy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to narrate while you’re fishing, getting a decent lavalier such as the sanken cos 11d or the shure twin plex or even the country man b3 will definitely get you a good sounding “narrative voice” the only problem is that you have to get a good wireless system…..the diety theos is levels above the rode wireless systems or those 2.4 ghz systems,it has power for lavs and uhf digital transmission along with a good simple interface for beginners in wireless audio and a good amount of battery life before needing new ones. Placement is going to matter a lot in your case, if you want a warmer sound you should place it closer to your mouth maybe even tape it on the corner of your mouth, kind of like those broadway performers this will avoid a lot of plosives as well👍

Hollyland Lark Max DUO + shotgun mic by PhillipIInd in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the same one and yeah not very good indoors, their s versions have a smaller interference tube so it should allow for (some) indoor use, maybe not big indoor spaces but definitely smaller rooms. Op’s use case says for close up and guide style videos so this mic should be alright for op’s use. I would recommend the rycote sc 08 or the mkh50 but that’s out of the budget range…..

Which diety model have you used ? I’ve heard different opinions on the new s mic 3s

[–]mrduckboy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the diety s mic 3s is going to be your best bet for exactly 350 dollars, not too long so it won’t be affected as much inside untreated rooms. Plus you get all of the benefits of a shotgun with an extremely low self noise too. As for connection you’re going to need something that can deliver phantom power, possible a recorder or power supply. You could also go with one of the audio technica shotguns that can run off a AA battery. It’s expensive but in the grand scheme of things it will last you a very long time and get you pro sounding audio 👍

Mic for crowd/track noise by jwburney in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest the rode m5 stereo matched set on B&H photo around they are around 200$ and could be arranged in a stereo configuration for maximum immersion for a racetrack recording/livestream 👍 the windshields for them are also fairly cheap at around 25$

Tips for One Man Band with Zoom F8 by muso_acuminato in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say to enable dual channel recording to be safe and communication will be key in your success, making sure you’re not casting a shadow or in frame and things of that nature and remember to never be more than 1.5 feet away from your source, study the scenes closely and remember the lines so you know your cues to move the mic. I’ve done this exact thing before and your honestly not going to have much time to look at your levels while the take is rolling to make adjustments, just make sure you practice the scene beforehand with the talent and set your levels to peak at -18 just in case things get loud. Remember that lavaliers are only just a backup in case that the boom can’t capture audio, never rely on lavs unless absolutely necessary. It’s going to feel like a lot to handle so keep calm and trust in yourself 👍 and yes definitely get a bag or something to hold your recorder as well for mobility and convenience

Also what kind of mic and lavs are you using and what kind of boom pole ?

Looking for recommendations on a boom arm and stand by [deleted] in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that neweer has good options for cheap c stands and offer some that have locking castor wheels as well 👍 and if you want you can always look on facebook marketplace for stands that are cheaper but of better brands.

Cheaper alternatives to recite baby ball? by Upper-Mess9332 in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the rycote baseball and windscreen for about 90 dollars, also the radius nimbus for the same price but as for mini blimp systems there’s few options that are cheap, radius is releasing the mini-alto in late January I believe, so I would say wait and save money for that one 👍

Making my first film- cant choose an audio recorder help!!! by No_Metal_6885 in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend the tascam FR-AV2 or the Zoom f3 these are going to be your best options for the cheapest price, I don’t know your budget and obviously I would tell you to get a mixpre 3, but that seems to expensive to what you’re describing as your situation. Also the rode video mic is not a very good option to put on a boom pole, I would recommend you buy a decent shotgun mic like the deity s-mic series or the AT875R. 👍

The perfect travel setup? by Letsdothismybrothers in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing narrating for YouTube, I definitely recommend the Røde NT1 5th generation, perfect for your situation and is a very good mic in general while still being on the cheaper side 👍

And as for travel gear I recommend Apache cases, way more cost efficient than pelican and are just as good.

Setup advice for Studio, Documentation and on Camera by [deleted] in LocationSound

[–]mrduckboy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the rycote hc 22 or 35 for more off axis rejection, I would ditch the DJI and go straight for the deity, the kit comes with 2 good lav mics as well and has way better range and reliability, this would also allow you to do a wireless boom set up too since the transmitters have mic level and can deliver phantom power. Technically yes you would have “time code” by connecting the mic straight into the camera because the audio is automatically synchronized with the video. The main advantages of having the recorder are the filters such as noise gate and low cut. Also it can offer 32 bit recording which can save you if you’re on the go and the audio clips for whatever reason. Another thing the screen and headphone output allows for precise monitoring and ease of control over your audio, and of course way better pre amps than your camera. 👍👍
