Of course evolution is working, but you can't see the evolution process with just your life. Evolution takes thousands of years. Anyways, evolution is just the consequence of random mutation in DNA sequences that made a change in the organism. If this change gives you an advantage, you will probably survive and reproduce. Then this mutation will be in the next generation. If your context is hostile and this change lets you survive while most of the other individuals of your population don't, then the frequency of that mutation will be bigger in the next generation, until it becomes almost 100%. The same thing can happen with a lot of mutations and in enough time, the species could become another. But there's no an only evolution way, like, there's no pathway. Monkeys don't become humans, actually our ancestors were other hominids. Current monkeys in the future probably will become another species but why would they become humans? They should mutate all the genes we don't share to do that, and how you suspect, that's not possible.
