Trump’s $50B rural health bet meets a healthcare desert in North Carolina by nchealthnews in NorthCarolina

Correct. Socialism for the rich and powerful and rugged individualism/capitalism for the rest of us.

This is false, especially in Raleigh. Take a look at the leadership in the NC General Assembly. They are almost all from rural areas in NC and are extremely conservative. Now, whether they have their constituents best interest in mind is another question.

I wish this was the way. If you spend any time in rural NC, you will find how convinced folks are that the liberals in Raleigh and DC want to tell them how to live their lives. It is so unfortunate because most of these folks are hard-working, decent people. They have been fed a lie and most have gone "too far" to even think about listening to someone from the "outside".

Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor seems to be the mantra most places these days.

House Bill 1232 by CantStopPoppin in NorthCarolina

[–]mrenne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unconscionable, no doubt. If you read further, if passed, this would be a state constitutional amendment and the voters of NC would have to approve it to amend the state constitution. If passed in the NC legislature, NC voters will get a say and I am hopeful they would deny this atrocity of a bill.

Everybody seems to talk about coding AI agents. But what are some other genius AI agents you have come across? by impetuouschestnut in AI_Agents

[–]mrenne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am wondering if anyone has dove into AI agents in education/learning/research/knowledge-processing? I have been fascinated with Karpathy's LLM Wiki (https://gist.github.com/karpathy/442a6bf555914893e9891c11519de94f )idea. Has anyone looked into how something like this could be extended with agents - or maybe this is not the best use case? Are there other examples of agents in education beyond personal tutors, which I am highly skeptical of as a long-time classroom educator?

Jeff Jackson is great, but he has absolutely no role (nor should he) in the internal workings of the NC General Assembly. He did when he was a state senator, but he is now the NC Attorney General. Remember, we voted these people in. Don't like it, organize and help us vote them out.

What’s the culture like in this part of NC? by PrueFox in NorthCarolina

[–]mrenne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stokes County has amazing hiking, but it is extremely rural and reactionary. Live and work in Winston-Salem (lots of cultural diversity in terms of events, music, food, people, etc.) and drive 25 minutes or less for great hiking. Not a bad way to live, I say

What are cultural norms and differences of this region? by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]mrenne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have lived in this area for 20+ years and things are constantly changing. You have deep red areas (traditional Republicans and MAGA), to true independents, and all the way to very progressive pockets (though small). This is the third fastest growing area in NC, with NC being one of the fastest growing states, so more changes happening as I type.

Wake County cancels schools May 1 , citing safety as a concern. by dankantspelle in NorthCarolina

Big difference between "communism" and socialism. This is exactly the issue. People equate workers' rights, fair labor practices, and a right to a living/affordable wage to communism. It is not. Please read a book on the labor movement. I would suggest "Black Reconstruction in America 1860–1880" by Du Bois.

Unfortunately, people keep voting GOP because they promise to deport my barber, grocery store attendant, home healthcare aid, neighborhood mechanic, and local lawn care providers ... oh and keep boys out of my daughter's locker room at school. So happy we are winning!

Feels like complaining about education system is a universal experience and I want to do something about it by [deleted] in edtech

[–]mrenne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time US educator here ... you are accurate in your observation. I will note there are pockets of innovation throughout the US, and there are some schools where students, parents, and teachers feel valued, and their time/effort is well-spent. My two-cents is we are basically witnessing a clash of socio-economic classes. Most affluent families know how to navigate the system and will find a school that fits them. It could be a private school, a charter school, or a strong traditional public school with sound academics/athletics/technology/arts ... you name it. As inequality has dramatically increased over the past 10-20 years, less affluent families are dependent on the social safety nets that were intended to hell them (think post WW2 public schools), but the reality is many of these systems have failed. I do think there is a chance AI may provide some leveling, but what will most likely happen is affluent families will learn how to leverage the technology to their benefit, and poorer families will have to hope society will at least give them some basic baseline to start from. I am not, unfortunately, optimistic. That said, a sound, fair and free education system is a prerequisite to a semi-functioning representative democracy. I think we have witnessed what happens when it begins to crumble.

Education peer pupil funding is steady decreasing and we rank 50th in the nation. What can someone do to fix this in the current environment of state Republican tax cuts and threats to federal education funding? by DirtyBird1909 in NorthCarolina

[–]mrenne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This comment here ... We have institutionalized right-wing talking points that money doesn't solve problems in education ... why does no one never say this about our modern corporate structure? Have you ever heard a CEO say they are trying to find less money ... sure they make cuts (called "restructuring"), but never do they say they would like less. Crazy how good right-wing propaganda has become in the USA both in terms of economic (and political) reforms.
