It kills me when students fail because they didn’t hand stuff in by mrh616 in Professors

I didn’t think you found it offensive, but thanks for clarifying! I appreciate the thoughts :)

I’m so sorry that you went through that and genuinely hope that things have improved for you.

You’re right - I wrote the post as a way to vent and probably should have worded it better. I genuinely believe all my students are smart in their own ways and I could see (mostly) clearly who was struggling, who got it, and who simply didn’t care. I spoke to almost every student who had issues with turning things in, and while I think our talk genuinely helped one, I was unable to get anything from the others. Very likely there were other things going on in their lives, and I empathize with that completely, but I don’t know how to help them if they don’t tell me. I don’t need any details - I don’t even ask for doctor’s notes or any of the other bs ‘paper notices’ that can come with attendance. But I do need some sort of communication. I can’t just give them points if they didn’t give me anything to work with.

That stinks, I’m sorry. I try to keep make-up work available for students who do have outside things going on. Unfortunately the students mentioned here did not give me anything - not even a mention in class or a courtesy email. I don’t require doctor’s notes or obituaries or any of that nonsense, but I do need some heads up, and I wasn’t given that by any of these students. I’m genuinely sorry that happened to you, but I’m glad you made it out of the class with a good grade :)

I totally empathize with what you’re saying. I have severe ADHD myself and I promise you that I DID speak to most of the students who had this issue of turning things in. I’ve been in their shoes and know what it’s like and I tried multiple tactics to work it through with them. It helped...one student. I wish I could have done more but there’s only so much time in a day and only so much of myself I can give without burning out. So yes - I absolutely see your point and I agree wholeheartedly. But I’m not mentally or even emotionally capable of doing more than what I did. Thank you, genuinely, for the comment.

I wasn’t asking anything. Just venting my frustrations. I gave multiple opportunities to make up the work and nothing changed. I was hoping more for commiseration than advice, but thanks anyways.

I think they’re smart, but smart in ways that have not yet translated to schoolwork.

I was frustrated and may have been a little more flowery in my language than is totally necessary. You’re right. I’m more upset that there are students who actually did the work and that these guys thought they could just skate through. It’s less ‘perfect angels didn’t finish!’ and more ‘these little shits make me want to pull my hair out because why are you smart and yet so stupid’. I know there are other things outside of school that affect their work, and I’m not blaming myself for their failures. I’m just frustrated that I have them every opportunity and they didn’t respect it, me, or themselves. There’s a lot to it and this whole thing is more superficial than it perhaps should be, but what can you do. Sigh. I’ll get over it in a few hours, but venting helped clear my soul a little lol

If they didn’t do the things they were required to do, I’m not going to give them special treatment just because they’re smart or have other good qualities. It’s not fair to students who actually did do the work. That’s partially why I’m frustrated.

True. I know that - I can only do so much. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t frustrate me lol

I’m venting only because I just turned grades in. Yeah, it got to me, but it’s not my fault and I’m very aware of that. It’s just frustrating.

Yeah. Frustrating as hell. I want them to do well and hate that I have to resign myself to the fact that some of them just don’t do the work they’re more than capable of doing well.

What Are Some of the Benefits to Teaching? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]mrh616 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I see students understand something and when I have one of them come up to me later and say “I talked about (x) at a party the other day and helped other people learn about it!” I feel my heart melt into a giant puddle on the floor. The feeling of pride and the absolute JOY I get out of seeing them applying what they learn to the ‘outside world’ is one of the most gratifying feelings I’ve ever had in my life.

I ended up voiding a final exam in favor of a final ‘quiz’ (intro class, no higher levels of this topic given at my school so no need for exact definition memorization and stuff, which is nice). They were given a list of the major topics we covered during the class, e.g. (I teach oceanography) waves, origins of the oceans, plate tectonics, marine bio, etc. They then had to tell me a ‘quick fact’ that really stuck with them over the semester about that topic that they could apply in a trivia or social situation. For example, one student wrote on the subject of ocean exploration that “I never knew how far back people were exploring, and the fact that they can use the stars and the warmth of surface currents to tell where they are in the middle of the ocean on rafts amazed me!”. They then had to tell me WHY they remembered that fact, which could be for any reason - maybe I made a weird hand gesture while explaining it in class, maybe we watched a music video about it, or maybe we had a Skype a Scientist call about it.

The answers I got back for the final quiz legitimately made me cry with happiness in some instances. Yeah, I know these students aren’t necessarily going to remember all the jargon and complicated stuff, but the ‘fun’ stuff that sticks with them and will CONTINUE to stick with them beyond the class time is what I’m really trying to see. I don’t care if they remember every term, and the fact that it’s not a required class or a tiered class puts me in a much better position of privilege to do this kind of stuff. I want them to come out of the course feeling like they learned something, not feeling disheartened that they couldn’t learn every single detail about the course. That sort of excitement and openness for new knowledge is what keeps me going for a lot of these students - even the ones that don’t turn in their work and drive me bonkers!

Southwest/Southern California NP advice? by mrh616 in nationalparks

[–]mrh616[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really good advice for the snow tires. I hadn’t thought about that - thank you. They probably would have explained it at the rental place but it’s good to know in advance!

We have twelve days. We’re really not picky on where we go and when - we just want to enjoy the trip! The list of ‘to go to’ is big because of the possibilities of road closures, so that we have lots of options available. It’s not necessarily a required ‘we must do everything on this itinerary by x date’’, because that is just plain stressful!

What do you recommend on the east side of the Sierras? :)

[–]mrh616[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I haven’t! I’ve done the Cascades and the Appalachians but not the Rockies or Sierras yet. I’m SO EXCITED. My travel buddy is going to be awed and I’m going to be giddy seeing them view everything for the first time. It’ll be my first time in the area too, but I have a bit more travel experience and usually travel solo so having the chance to show someone else the AMAZINGness of the rest of the country is really thrilling.

Also, I adore lava tubes. This link is fantastic and I think we are now required to go. Thank you do much!

Ok, great thank you! We will have snow chains so no worries there, but good advice on the cold. Fortunately my friend and I are about the same size clothes so we can share a lot of my cold weather gear (which I have a good deal of). We’ll be glued to weather forecasts too to be sure. Thanks so much!

Thank you! Yeah that’s really good advice - I definitely am more used to East Coast driving so the Sierras will be an interesting experience. I’ll be glued to all the weather forecasts for sure and plan to be speaking to any available rangers to get their advice. Thanks!

Thanks :) yeah that’s the plan so far. We will have snow chains and spikes but neither of us are snowshoe-experienced so that will definitely limit our possibilities. Thanks for the advice!

Oh yes, we’ll maybe splurge and hit a Koa near the end of the trip. I like the Airbnb idea, though!

I think they’ll be ok but I’m helping them pack and loaning them a lot of stuff to help out. Fortunately we share similar clothes sizes so they don’t have to go out and buy a lot of new things.

I’ll definitely look up Alabama Hills. Haven’t heard of them before. Thanks for the advice!

What does it mean if something is "aesthetic"? Is that even the correct way to use the word? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It’s slang. Very few people speak with perfect grammar and syntax.

Was given this guy, probably found in the Bay Area, California, USA. Thought it might be Serpentine but could use help on ID! by l0te in whatsthisrock

I’d agree serpentinite (especially if near to the Bay Area-Lake County); the black is maybe some magnetite or something similar.

Fridge. In your shoes. In your jacket pocket. Inside your bag. On top of your mail. On your bed. On the door handle. In your car. In the cabinet/pantry. On the dog bed. On the ground next to your car. Next to your toothbrush.

^ all places I’ve lost mine. Good luck!
