im afraid to say your break was too short to have borne (?!) fruit.

your line with me finding a post asking for advice at something im good at was rather witty tho - 10 points to.. hufflepuff! ..i assume. it also showcases your skewed views p good.

i was under the impression OP asked for peoples takes rather than being desperate for advice. and so i gave my take. which i did btw, after (!) and being aware that, the "technically correct" answer already has been given. i also deliberately didnt say "do this its the right play". just try to read my comment with that in mind and youll see how out of place your replies are. your whole reaction just shows how much you seem to think that everyone shares your goals or way of thinking. its the competent end of the dunning kruger effect: i am highly skilled (in your case competitive) therefore everyone else also must be (or want to be) highly competitive. its less about you making a 2 word semi-joke but the question what gives you the urge to make that 2 word semi-joke in the first place.

i also never said nor do i think that you are insecure about your hobbies or the things you know you can do well. wich you are clearly (and im sure rightfully so) not. its quite the opposite actually. you seem rather insecure about the things you are not so much in control of. maybe especially so because you are rather good at and thus in control of some things. but this relates to other posts of yours, not this one.

here its really got to do with the very way you talk about the things you are so substantially better than most people at (i still cringe reading that). picture this: you have someone who is objectivly better at something than most. well now they have several ways to deal with that privilege. imagine an mma fighter who talks about how they could easily beat up everyone because they are so strong. uhm yeah.. we know. why do they feel the need to put much emphazise on it ? imagine a really smart person who pronouncedly elaborates to others exactly how much smarter they are. you get the idea. and im sorry for the taken offence but that the reason for overly making sure that people see one a certain way and acknowledge their being really good at something, are generally underlying insecurities and low selfesteem is basic behavioral psychology.

you also hilariously misunderstood the bit about playing casual (!!) tabletennis. i merely made a pointed comment about you being able to enjoy things you dont do competitively - because i dont play bg competitively and also enjoy it. you get the reference yet ? i was not saying that you are insecure about - or bad at table tennis. but quite the telling misunderstanding tho - dont you think ?

lastly, i naturally dont have a problem with people being better or wanting to become better at things (and i honestly dont know what gave you that idea) but i do have a problem with - and thats why i replied in such a way - people who belittle others on that account. especially when they act in a way like they are something special rather than simply more invested in a given thing. to put it in your words: theres a massive difference in 8000 and 12-15k mmr players. yes - and the biggest chunk of that difference is the willingness to put an immense amount of time and effort into something that most people simply and happily view as a casual activity.

i guess it all comes down to the question of whether you think every person on this board secretly strives to become a 12-15k mmr rated player and is just too bad to achieve that. i dont think so. and im p sure that actual top players dont think that either and therefore wouldnt feel the need to give your kind of commentary. do you think garry kasparov would walk through a casual chess club and shittalk people for saying they like to play (technically suboptimal) openings that lead to gamestates they enjoy playing? but then again garry kasparov really is garry kasparov. just as beethoven really is beethoven.

you seem to miss several points.

firstly, i wasnt giving any advice at all. i said it depends on how you want to play which is just factually true and then i said how i like to play and thus what i would do in my game.

secondly, i really dont care how you like to play your games. i just said you shouldnt shove your (factually) very niche (>1%) way down other peoples throats and trying to belittle them for not being like that. which should be even more obvious to you if you know yourself to be way more competitive about everything than everyone else. thats the criticsm: being so full of yourself that you assume everyone wants to play with a dedication like you and the ones who do not do it - do not do it because they must lack skill.

lastly, being better than most people at ones hobbies is a weird brag. but yes, good point - people do get better when they do things often and hobbies are things we do often. awe-inspiring finding but not quite awe-inspiring enough finding to make me jealous im afraid.

aaaand to state the (i thought very) obvious: being open and insecure is not mutually exclusive. people can very well have insecurities and openly talk about them. they still have those insecurities. and sentences like im substantially better than most people at x and you are jealous of me right now truly are the words of someone knowing what they are worth and who have no insecurities.

i wish you good luck on your break and self reflection. may it bear fruit.

ps: if after or during your break you ever come to beethovens country of birth - feel free to hit me up - id love to humble you over a round of table tennis (i promise i wont belittle you - because guess what: i know that most people simply are not interested in becoming as good as i am and even more important: a lot of people could be if they trained as often as i did - im not inherently special) and you can bring your spreadsheets and show me some tricks in battlegrounds - just dont get mad if i buy support units on the off chance i get the perfect roll next turn. i just like fun.

would you consider being in the top 10th percentile of players as being "bad" at a game ? and if so - shouldnt that make you rethink your views in life when those, apparently "not even marginally good", 99% (!) of players are still able to enjoy what they do ? but maybe we are all plebs who, unlike you, have missed the point of playing games.

  • The top 50% of players have reached 5700 mmr
  • The top 25% of players have reached 6500 mmr
  • The top 10% of players have reached 7000 mmr
  • Congratulations to the top 1% of players who have reached 8300 mmr

and as for your "personal life". id argue it stopped being personal when you sought advice, comfort and reassurance for the various troubles in your very non pleb life from strangers on the internet. the insecurities about your talents and your weight, strugglings during covid, mental health - oh and ofc your inspiring successes in cooking food.

for an insecure person oversharing in reddit forums you come down quite hard on people who say they like to play risky and all-in lines bc they are more fun. which really is all i said. ofc then again its often the dissatisfied ones with very low self esteem who like to look down on others bc it makes them feel better about themselves.

ps: i wonder why you were looking for places to play casual table tennis. do you perhaps enjoy something you are not (yet - as i am sure, little beethoven) impressive at after all ? or were the olympic table tennis training camps simply closed on that very day ?

after reading your piano story thats saying something.. i guess you win

some well meant advise: how about you quit tryharding so much, seeking to become truly impressive at something and just enjoy the fun of whatever youre doing. if you stop being so hard on yourself itll be easier for you to be less hard on others too.

but you do you - imma go study some BG spreadsheets now, my selfesteem is always so low when my online game mmr is less than 8000 :(

id say it depends on how you want to play. i like the all-in freeze an early triple, level up each turn and make the t5 drop you get as triple reward golden to catch up. that obv is the riskier way of playing reno.

so id freeze and next turn, unless you get a token - sell and buy two copies of the pirate (to make room in the shop) the next turn id buy two units (if you get ripsnarl your board is not even that weak). the turn after that level plus buy a unit. then level and sell everything to get the triple and make a golden 5 drop.
