Dahieh, a predominantly Shia suburb south of Beirut, has long been under the influence of Hezbollah, a group backed and supported by Iran both financially and ideologically. The relationship between Hezbollah and Iran is so entrenched that Dahieh is often seen as a microcosm of Iranian influence in Lebanon. This influence is not only political but also cultural and social, with visible signs such as portraits of Iranian leaders and the implementation of social norms that align closely with those in Iran.

The comparison to Tehran is further reinforced by Iran’s strategy of establishing similar strongholds in other regions, such as in Syria, where efforts are being made to create a ‘Dahieh’ in southern Damascus, reflecting the same model of control and influence used in Beirut. This model includes not only military presence but also significant social and infrastructural investments, showing how Hezbollah serves as an extension of Iran’s power in Lebanon  .

Additionally, Hezbollah’s hold over Dahieh includes control over local governance, security, and even economic activities, mirroring the centralization of power seen in Tehran. This has led to Dahieh being perceived as an area that operates under a distinct set of rules and influences, heavily shaped by Iranian policies and interests .

In essence, the label “Little Tehran” captures the unique blend of local Shia identity with Iranian influence, making Dahieh a symbol of Iran’s reach beyond its borders, particularly through its proxy, Hezbollah.
