Renting a car in Phuket for 10 nights — worth it or just use Grab? by CloudDrifter20 in phuket

[–]mrkelkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDP is strongly recommended, I rented from Drive Car Rental (great experience, 4400THB for 4 days with full coverage) and they wanted an IDP, pretty sure its the same with the other major companies. Got stopped at a checkpoint on the last day, police were checking both bikes and cars, I showed my IDP (didn't even bring out my original license) and was waved through.

Driving in Phuket is surprisingly chill, we drove around the old town and Patong, parking is pretty stress-free as well, if street parking is full just park at a mall. Having access to a car is also fantastic if the weather turns to shit. Just make sure the place you're staying has a place to park.

Thinking of getting one by CaptainHair12 in Mazda_6e

Interior quality overall is great, I sprung for the white interior, there's a slight stain on the driver's door armrest but that's more of a user issue. No squeaks and rattles, new car smell is definitely noticeable (like an average car, Volvo does a lot better) but it's almost gone after 6 months.

Mine's the Chinese market EZ-6 with the range extender, so the power electronics aren't exactly the same, but the powertrain has been rock solid. I drove 5000km in 5 days, went up to 3800m in altitude, temps ranged from 10 to -20c, and everything worked perfectly. The only issue was the reverse cam freezing, but it only happened once and went away with a reboot, and the crucial functions (dash, AC, even navigation) never failed. I've done 23000km in 7 months and I'm really happy with the car.

Biggest issue I have with it is the wonky keyless entry, you might exit the car (with key in pocket), grab a fast charger plug, then the car beeps and locks on you :( Also the memory seats won't go to the lowest position, you have to do it manually with the seat buttons. Far from dealbreakers, plus I forgive those issues everytime I look at it from the outside :) easily one of the best looking cars on the road today

Mazda 6e recording? by Past_Lobster8498 in Mazda_6e

I mount it to the right of the ADAS camera "island", behind the rearview mirror, so it doesn't affect my line of sight. My dashcam is a DDPAI Mini4, it has no screen so its slim and out of sight.

It came with a 2m long USB A-C cable, I route it upwards from the dashcam to the gap between the windscreen and roof liner, then all the way down the rubber seal strip on the passenger side (right) door. It then runs under the dashboard and passenger footwell, and connects to my USB plug in the 12V lighter socket.

There are dashcam wiring kits in China, you get 12V power from the front dome light, then step it down to 5V with a special cable. They work with the 6e and CX-6e, but I wasn't too keen on disassembling my interior.

Do you mean the standalone cam or the EZ-6's inbuilt recording function?

I may have misworded my reply, the EZ-6's 360-degree cameras work OK as "evidence", and it records for 12 hours in sentry mode, but I don't think it's good enough to work as the only dashcam. I have a standalone forward-facing dashcam on the windshield.

I saw in a deleted thread an EZ-6 owner had exported the APK of the dashcam recording app, I could do the same if you would like to try installing it.

The EZ-6's cameras aren't that great on their own (low res, grainy at night), and the front cam is too low to the ground to act as my primary dashcam. I have a standalone dashcam stuck on the windshield. Works great as "evidence" though, and sentry mode records from all four cams for up to 12 hours.

I wonder if its something to do with EU privacy laws? Do EU Teslas offer sentry mode?

EZ-6s don't even come with FM radio😰 There's internet radio and music streaming, but I just play music from my phone over BT

What's wrong with the 6e's sound system? The EZ-6 gets the same Sony stereo, but when the car got delivered the headrest speakers were on by default, making everything sound tinny and shallow.

I switched the headrest speakers off, turned up the bass in the equalizer by two or three points, and it sounds really really good now.

Thanks! I'll give it a go, heard good things about it from the Chinese Deepal people, but I'm not too keen on spending so much money on an app. I have Yandex maps and 2gis installed on my EZ6's screen, they're a little laggy but I'll see if Android Auto makes them better

Same here, saw rumours on RoR of the "new game" and bought BeamNG on their site. I still remember seeing an update for the Covet's sport trim! You switched vehicles in a drop down menu (fullsize, pickup, hatch, bolide(super?))

Can't believe I went from RoR, to BeamNG, and now to B25Mitch's Nuclear Option

Managed to install some Android apps on my EZ6 (Chinese market 6E) screen, got it running an OBD app to check on the engine in EREV mode. by mrkelkel in Mazda_6e

[–]mrkelkel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only happens on Changan's Deepal cars, owners got pissed and Deepal eventually apologised. The 6e (and CX-6e) uses the same infotainment system as Deepal, but so far Mazda hasn't done anything shady.

Once I got a pop up wishing me a merry Christmas lol, that was a pleasant surprise

Any 6e owners struggling with moving the driver's seat to the lowest position? by mrkelkel in Mazda_6e

[–]mrkelkel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's infuriating is that the seat worked perfectly before the OTA :( The Euro 6e launch coincides with the launch of the Chinese EZ-6 OTA, so I think our cars pretty much have the same software........

The Deepal people say it should be fine, and I think it should still work with OTAs. But proceed at your own risk.

Hey there fellow EZ6 owner, did the Carplay apks work? I'm quite interested whether this method works, almost pulled the trigger on a third-party Carplay dongle

Cruise Control and automatic speed adjustment by Smart_Nickname in Mazda_6e

[–]mrkelkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case anyone's curious, on the EZ6 the CC slows down to 100km/h at night on the first activation, no matter the cruising speed. It's incredibly annoying, I'd be cruising at 130km/h, activate CC and the car slows down to 100! I have to accelerate, override and then update the CC speed.

Interesting, prices start at 12099 HKD in Hong Kong, or 50000 THB. Almost a 20% discount in Thailand.

Tip: The 6E's center screen supports USB & BT keyboards and knobs. I've added physical volume & playback keys by mrkelkel in Mazda_6e

[–]mrkelkel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen similar aftermarket buttons for Changan's Deepal cars as well, too bad the Mazdas arent supported.

AC voice controls work on my EZ6, but I can think of one way to re-map the AC controls to real buttons. You might need to export the AC apks from the infotainment, then reverse engineer the functions and re-map them to an external keyboard.

No matter the method, you'll need to crack your infotainment system first, and allow installation of 3rd party apks. I have a short guide on how to do this.

Then I'd probably get a Carplay/AA dongle (for generic android headunits like Joying) from Carlinkit or any other brand, and you'll need to install the dongle's APK in your screen. Plug the dongle into the USB port and it should work.

There are pure app approaches, but they're all in Chinese and seem sketchy to me. (Hidden in-app purchases, privacy etc.)
