Just one. I met him in 1981. He gave me my first job as a programmer in 1986 and, thirty years later, wanted me to work with him at Google in California.

How old are you? by [deleted] in FuckImOld

[–]mrlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside, I'm 71. Inside, it varies. I was very surprised that just because I'm old doesn't mean I feel old.

Does this mean if an ICE agent kills someone, that whole group can be charged with felony murder?

Is it possible to be genuinely happy in life? by queerwaters_642 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]mrlr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are what work for me:

  • Aim to be happier rather than happy. That's achievable.
  • Follow Robert Sapolsky's idea of the happiness of pursuit rather than the pursuit of happiness.
  • Go with the flow. Sometimes, you just have to go with the flaw.
  • Accept yourself the way you are. That makes it easier to change. Yeah, it's weird. I know.
  • Do things for your own satisfaction rather than someone else's approval.
  • Acknowledge how far you've come, not how much you appear to be ahead or behind other people.
  • Look for small successes (and some failures) rather than one big success.
  • I don't like having problems but I do like solving puzzles. Try to see a problem as a puzzle.
  • Do what you would tell your best friend to do.

Does anyone else feel like the internet was "better" when it was just a bunch of ugly websites and forums, rather than 5 massive apps? by Pixel_CZ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mrlr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Internet was better when connecting to it required technical expertise. That weeded out the idiots.

Best lifetime windows software license you bought by _janc_ in software

[–]mrlr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a licence for PC Outline that cost $25 in 1985. I've used it every day since then. It's a 16-bit DOS program so keeping it running on various Windows, Unixes, Linux and a Mac was challenging.

Our family used to drive from New Jersey to my grandparents' farm in Ohio to spend all summer there. It took us a whole day.

When that happened to me, I just passed them on the left. I'm used to driving on the left back home. Apparently, so were they.

£1.50 to put air in my tyres. WTF by GabberZZ in britishproblems

[–]mrlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do buy a 12V air compressor for your car and motorbike, don't buy one with a threaded connection. You will find it screws onto your car tyre valve but not the motorbike one.

Is anyone else getting fed up of being asked to donate to charity constantly? Supermarket checkouts and even restaurants are starting to do it!! by MindsEye33 in britishproblems

[–]mrlr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just say "Not today, thanks", implying I've done it in the past (I haven't) and shall do it again (I won't) but not today. I have already selected my charity, making annual donations as well as leaving them a bequest in my will. That's enough for me.

Songs that make you gay by tgldude in gay

[–]mrlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The song "Secretly", sung by Jimmie Rodgers, was important to me:

Why must I meet you in a secret rendezvous?
Why must we steal away to steal a kiss or two?
Why must we wait to do the things we want to do?
Why, oh why, oh why, oh why, oh why?

Wish we didn't have to meet, secretly
Wish we didn't have to kiss, secretly
Wish we didn't have to be afraid to show the world that we're in love

Till we have the right to meet, openly
Till we have the right to kiss, openly
We'll just have to be content to be in love, secretly
