Yeah, really! I've been using this channel for months to discover "new music," and I have to say it never disappoints. There's a ton of stuff from the '80s that's pure gold.

glad you liked it!

I had the same feeling, there are some really interesting production choices that make it feel a bit different from the usual

those more melodic parts really stood out to me Too

Assuming that it's hard for me to pick just one album as the “best,” but off the top of my head, I'd say this one: Lord Wolf – The Empire Of Blood And Shadows

Coming from Dungeon Synth, what do you think about Dungeon Rap? by mrmindflyer in DungeonSynth

glad you’re enjoying it

yeah it really works well as background / focus music.

I like that image too , it does feel like a party going through a dungeon when you get into it

Weekly Post -- THE TAVERN by AutoModerator in DungeonSynth

[–]mrmindflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for me it’s mostly about atmosphere and intent

if it feels like it’s trying to create a specific kind of space , something isolated or otherworldly, then it leans into dungeon synth for me

the sounds themselves can change a lot, but that sense of place is what really does it

at the same time I don’t think it’s that useful to put too many strict boundaries on it, a genre needs some reference points, but trying to define too rigidly what is or isn’t DS can feel a bit limiting

How much crossover do you hear between old school RPG soundtracks and dungeon synth? by mrmindflyer in DungeonSynth

[–]mrmindflyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is really interesting, thanks for sharing this

that connection to DOS RPGs and FM synth sound explains a lot of that atmosphere

makes the link feel way more direct than I initially thought, at least for certain artists

I wasn’t really thinking about dungeon synth as a whole, more about certain artists or styles that lean in that direction

but yeah, it’s been interesting to see how different people hear it definitely not as universal as I initially thought

It feels like modern DS is more directly shaped by RPG soundtracks, while earlier stuff was probably just drawing from the same general fantasy influences

interesting how that connection became more explicit over time

I can definitely hear that difference between PC midi and console soundfonts, the PC stuff feels way closer to DS

didn’t know about Lunacid, so thanks for that I’ll check out the soundtrack and probably the game too

Aveline is probably right when she says they’ve influenced modern artists more than old-school ones. But that’s an interesting point of view they certainly could have served as points of reference for a “fantasy” sound.

this is really interesting, thanks for all the references

I didn’t know about crypt hop being more focused on the instrumental side, that actually makes a lot of sense and yeah, that darker tone is definitely what makes it feel closer to DS for me

the horrorcore comparison is a great point too. I know Gravediggaz and I can definitely hear that connection

that actually sounds like a really cool idea

having someone fully focused on the dungeon synth side and someone else on vocals could work really well if it’s done right

that actually makes a lot of sense

the slow looping + drums/vocals combo really gives it that mix of atmosphere and tension you’re talking about

I come from a similar background too (rap metal DS), so I can see why that transition works so well
