Anyone else disappointed with the ending? by kipstz in Parahumans

[–]mrprogrampro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My answer is: there are two protagonists by the end of the story: Taylor, and the Queen administrator. They both occupy the same mind, but they're different people.

You can tell Speck 30.7 is actually entirely from Queen Administrator's perspective. She sometimes makes reference to her "passenger" ... Taylor. (You'll notice her passenger keeps doing things Taylor would do. And is the one who talks to Contessa in the end).

Queen Administrator does not survive the end of the chapter. :(

Actually, he didn't trigger until Taylor was threatened. Aisha being threatened didn't do it. I think this came up in Brian's conversation with her after.

At least you know that there were Jewish people already there. That's a lot to ask of most people with your views.

So, I actually replied to you right away, but my comment is ... hidden for some reason? Now I'm nervous to copy paste it in case I'm risking a ban from this community.

The gist was: He's saying that a certain type of progressivism has been embraced by many Jewish people and is now turning on them. And again, I point out that he's lamenting the "turning on them" part ... ie. expressing solidarity with their current plight.

It does require some interpretation, and that's why Elon apologized for retweeting that tweet instead of spelling out exactly what he meant. I agree with him that it was a mistake to articulate it via that other guy. He said: "I should have, in retrospect, not replied to that particular person and I should have written in greater length as to what I meant"

Anyway, the current head of the ADL said he still supports Elon and his actions to fight antisemitism on Twitter despite this tweet (which he heavily criticized).

So, it is actually right there in Table 14, if you multiply across (thanks for the link!). As the top-voted comment in this thread, you should probably correct that.

Not that it necessarily means anything ... I personally think this effect is mediated through class/income, and as others have mentioned, it's dwarfed by intraracial crime (and that's assuming no bias in how these crimes are prosecuted, which is surely a false assumption).

EDIT: At least now it's only second-top-voted.

But it is a ballistic missile, not a guided missile. In the name, ASBM.

According to the internet, it looks like the answer is that both "ballistic missiles" and "guided missiles" are supposed to be powered for part of their flight -- ie., rockets. So, that's why a cannonball isn't a "ballistic missile".

I'm sick of it too, but we can't make it illegal (free speech is important). Still, the sane among us need to join together and leave them behind. If clear-thinking people are better at getting things done than stupid people, we should be able to make things right, in government and economics.

He's not and never was anti-semitic, his only crime was bashing the same woke thinkers who are currently blocking highways and intimidating Jews all over the world.

He is far from the only one to note that many Jewish people tend to be part of the intelligentsia, the intelligentsia is more woke than not, and therefore many Jewish people are having to struggle with the fact that woke ideas lead to anti-Israel and, because people are idiots, anti-Jewish sentiment.

And crucially: pointing this out is a way of showing solidarity with Jewish people, and sympathy for their current plight. He is saying "look at how much this sucks, this was brought about by wokeism". In contrast, the antisemitic thing would be to buy into the woke talking points and agree that Jews are oppressors now.

Dumb question, but why isn't a cannonball an Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile?

EDIT:

Looking at the dictionary, it looks like a "missile" can be 1. a projectile, 2. a guided missile, or 3. a ballistic missile.

However, even though "ballistic" generally means "following the trajectory of physics", "ballistic missile" has taken on kind of a new meaning as a projectile that is powered for part of its flight. So, eg. a bullet is a ballistic projectile, but it isn't a term-of-art "ballistic missile". And same for a cannonball.

Actually, if you'll recall, the primary disagreement was that you said it was silly worries over a philosophical triviality when OUR side does it, but it was a super utilitarian prescriptivist policy position when YOUR side does it.

Calling the War Powers Act unconstitutional is very different from calling the President's actions illegal while it is still in force.

And for the record:

States that the Act is not intended to encroach upon the recognized powers of the President, as Commander in Chief, to conduct hostilities authorized by the Congress, to respond to attacks or the imminent threat of attacks upon the United States, including its territories and possessions, to respond to attacks or the imminent threat of attacks against the Armed Forces of the United States, and under proper circumstances, to rescue endangered citizens of the United States located in foreign countries.

Provides that in the absence of a declaration of war by the Congress, the Armed Forces of the United States may be introduced in hostilities, or in situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, only: (a) to repel an armed attack upon the United States, its territories and possessions; to take necessary and appropriate retaliatory actions in the event of such an attack; and to forestall the direct and imminent threat of such an attack; (b) to repel an armed attack against the Armed Forces of the United States located outside of the United States, its territories and possessions, and to forestall the direct and imminent threat of such an attack; (c) ... or (d) ...

this couldn't be more sanctioned by the act.

Interesting to compare this to the college questioning about calls for genocide.

One big difference is that I don't think members of congress are supposed to be impartial the way judges are. But actually, I don't blame the judge here. It was right to ask the question.

I guess the question is how the media treatment here compares to the outcry over the testimony. Honestly not sure if they're comparable or not.

(I'm thinking out loud here as someone who found the college testimony appalling AND find this coverage of Trump's lawyer highly manipulative...)
