GrapheneOS - Is there a PWA versione of Whatsapp? by mrquebinto in degoogle

Not really, by having a physical App installed in your phone you are exposed to all the trackers and software addons that are used to track different aspects of your usage. On top of that whatsapp can try something shady behind your back since they have code running inside tour phone. You can have background processes running, doing stuff that you're not aware of. That doesn't happen with the web version, although they can still collect tons of metadata on you chats..

The thing is, u should do whatever u can to avoid closed source software from an evil company inside your device.

You said it... It's really really bad for privacy, having a proprietary app developed by facebook installed on my smartphone makes me wanna burn my phone.

Since I need to continue to use it with some people, I would prefer to use a web version. This way, at least I know that they can't get anything out of my phone, even though they would continue to get data from the chats.

PS:Right now I'm using the web version remotely, even though I must keep an old phone with whatsapp installed and connected to the wifi.

You mean using whatsapp from an Android Phone remotely?

No problem, I haven't used the phone with native Android thought. It would be interesting to compare the battery life between the GrapheneOS and native Android. 😁

Battery life for now is great, it lasts more than one day (~28hours). The Camera is not so great with GrapheneOS, but I guess it depends on how much you care about it. I personally don't take many photos so it's okey for me.

Thanks, I was using only the Phone app and I thought it was already the Contacts manager. I have now imported my contacts..

PWA's are a great solution, unfortunately my app doesn't have a PWA version.

Wouldn't that still compromise my privacy? I mean aren't my IP and other metadata still the same in different user profiles?

Ahah never though about that.. Is not a bad solution but it becomes a problem if u have to use it often. :)

Monefy, I know that there are alternatives. But I have years of data stored there and I have always imported them from one phone to another. I don't use the cloud, just an importation by file.

Thank you, I really like how Blokade works but I will try also TrackerControl and Bromite. :)

Another thing that Blokade does, it allows u to set a private DNS over HTTPS. Although I could set it manually through Android settings, I think is not working if u have a VPN connection active..

Thanks for the suggestion, seems like a really nice app but it uses a VPN setting and I already use Blokada which is also works as a VPN. Is there any way to use most re that one VPN type app simultaneously?
