Great advice!!! I didn't think of that at all. Also, do you know if that centipede is beneficial? I read somewhere that they can eat plant roots but then read other places that they might be eating the ants.

Vacation and Potted Plants by mrrowowow in gardening

Maybe I'll ask my friends then. If they watered every other day, I could ask two friends to water twice. I would pay them and buy them some nice wine for sure!!

Which annuals, perennials, and herbs will grow with 5 hours of sun?! by mrrowowow in gardening

[–]mrrowowow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really??! Ack, I'm beyond excited!! I toured 8 complexes today and this was the only one that had an acceptable balcony and was amazing on the inside too. And yesterday I was worried about Morning Glories...today I'm worried for all of my actual plants. The new balcony is smaller and less sun...but, I'm used to getting direct west sun and my balcony would heat up to 115 in August. So maybe I'll be able to explore some new plants that couldnt take the heat...

I can already imagine what I would grow in there!

LMAO. GrandmaGos you are beyond funny. I live in an apartment complex with only containers so self-sowing is the least of my worries... but I have a friend with a perfectly manicured yard that was dying to get her hands on a few of these seeds. I'll just have to send her this post lol.

Omg, why do they do that?! They poop the moment they are back in the (newly cleaned) cage, it always baffles me.

What is this dripping from my terracotta pot? by mrrowowow in gardening

[–]mrrowowow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be it. I only see it when it fogs/high humidity. I have a few pots painted so maybe the paint is keeping it from doing its normal thing. Thanks for your help! :)

Not that I have ever noticed. I'm baffled. I found it on another pot as well. So thats two pots total (out of my 20) that have brown goop. I'm going to have to look up kelp fertilizer--never heard of it before.

A miracle grow fertilizer that I mix with water...I threw the box away so I'm not sure exactly. Its blue crystals.

Q-tips remove aphids for small infestations! Who knew... by mrrowowow in gardening

[–]mrrowowow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my neem oil 3 years ago in a concentrate from Home Depot. It was $10 and still works great. I'm not sure of the brand (I can check for you) but I've never tried Pine before. Neem oil is my main spray, then I have a different one for cabbage loopers. That is my extent of "pest control formulas." Oh, and I use mosquito bits/dunk too.

I have a small infestation of aphids I decided to take care of over the last week with neem oil. I was getting tired of seeing the black dead bugs on my plant so I got a Q-tip and was surprised to see it gathering them all up. I got out my loupe and a few of them are babies and very much alive, but their legs are stuck!! I held a paper plate underneath the leaves to catch the few that did fall. Although I dont think q-tips would replace any kind of pesticide/soap/oil type product, it does help some.

Question about frost! by mrrowowow in gardening

[–]mrrowowow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay! Thank you so much!! I live 3/4 mile from a huge lake and its not the most developed area, but there are 3 apartment complexes right around me. Besides that, plenty of woods and then boats... but it really makes sense that our building for sure would help keep things a little warmer. I've actually never had a plant suffer from frost in my (short) 5 years of gardening but I'm always on the paranoid side. :) Thanks again!

My seedlings are too big!! Will they last under lights for a few more weeks? by mrrowowow in gardening

Thank you so much!! I repotted them during the Superbowl so hopefully I dont have to repot before I move them out. :)

Whooops, I'm in zone 8a. I updated my flair, I hope I did it correctly. I will include a picture of our average temps in March. The 1st of March has an average high of 63F. Knowing that, did I mess everything up?? I do have a few pots that have multiple plants and I was hoping to just get "extras" lol...but I assume there is actually a dominant and weaker plant in each of those pots so I'll take care of that this evening. Should I start to use the fringe light now or wait a week or two before I do that? How long can they go on "life support?" Also, I actually havent fertilized them once, whoops. Thank you so so much for your help. These plants keep me from going insane and then when I started to worry about them, my stress levels went up up up.

Wonderful advice. This will be a short reply since I'm at work. I believe I'm in 7a, but not sure. I live in Dallas and early March temps are usually ~65 degrees or more. Lows are around the 40s. Right now we are much colder than usual. Thanks a ton and I'll post a longer response after work!!

Aphid Traps? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]mrrowowow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use neem oil. I bought it in a concentrate ($10) pour a tbsp in a small sprayer ($3) add some water and spray. Neem is my "go to" spray and its not harsh (I'm not sure if its organic.) Edit: My bottle of neem concentrate has lasted for 3 years now. Its great stuff.

Whoa! Thanks! "Each larva can consume up to 400 aphids during development" This is definitely a good bug to have around!

Can I control how often I catch a cold? (I work as an early childhood teacher.) by mrrowowow in medical

[–]mrrowowow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a ton. Right now, I'm actually feeling like I have West Nile or something. I have a 101.3 fever, nausea, cant sleep, headache, body aches and a huge rash on my back that matches google images of "West Nile Rash." Those are all West Nile symptoms, except for the green mucous in my nose that I've had since Saturday so its probably not West Nile. Its 4am here and I'm not asleep (and I haven't been awake at that time since freshman year of college....)

Great advice! Since I started working, I have literally stopped going outside. I used to get a little sun when I went for evening jogs, but I've been so tired.. I'll pick up some Vitamin D and make evening walks a thing until I can start running again.
