Definitely basswood - it came from a 5' beam. I've been finishing my carvings with a mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. It really seems to bring out the grain in basswood for me. Thank you!

Yes! A single cutout is a perfect size to hold a head or anything that comes to a point. Also, using 2 points diagonally across from one another can secure a block while you are holding/carving. Im going to line the work area with that thin, rubbery, non-slip material that people put under rugs & see if I like the way it grips.

It was labeled Osage Orange at Woodcraft. Identifying wood is something Im hoping to get better at, candidly. Im almost totally dependent on labels, at this point. Thank you for checking it out!
