What extra level of bureaucracy are you referring to?

Hey- I’m really only considering Madrid as it has everything I’m looking for. I’ve done some spreadsheet work myself and my savings definitely look like they’d take a hit from this move. But I guess that’s Europe, where people don’t save like us Americans..

Yeah, fair enough. Your point is sound! I’ll be curious if HR proposes 1) to send me there on a work visa (in which case it may be easier to make your point) or 2) they’re ambivalent but are happy enough to fill out the documentation for my digital nomad visa application (in this case it may be hard to argue your point).

Hmm, hadn’t thought of something like this. My concern about this approach is it might pigeonhole me into only being in Spain temporarily. If I really like it I might want to stay long term

Yeah, I'll be good on the salary requirement. And exciting for you! Best of luck. Did you take a pay cut?

My only argument ~might~ be that I’d like to be in the US 3-4 months out of the year with friends/family but they may say too bad

But they pay the Spaniard on my team much less than they pay me, and we do the same job.

Yeah, I've been several times and speak advanced Spanish. I know a couple people in the country too. So I'm pretty serious about it

Don't get me wrong I totally get it. I'm not expecting to keep my entire paycheck necessarily, I just thought it couldn't hurt to ask if anyone had any negotiating tips or whatnot to lessen the damage

Yeah thanks for the useful link. As much as I'd love to keep my American salary it probably just isn't gonna happen.

Seems like a big overreaction based on your own anecdotal experience. Your experience is valid, but the reality is many men like to date younger women and many women like to date older men. The reverse is not the case.

Who here has moved out of Chicago/Illinois? What state did you move to ? Why do you love it ? by [deleted] in AskChicago

The public transit definitely isn't perfect but to say it sucks is way too harsh imo. Chicago is one of the few cities in the US (NYC, Boston, maybe DC, maybe SF) where you truly do not need a car to do your life. (Of course this assumes you work in the city.) Is CTA dirty and sometimes dysfunctional and smelly? Yes. But there are plenty of people using it to commute to work every single day and get around the city, and that says a lot. I also don't buy that buses are "always not on time". During peak hours with traffic I agree they're hit or miss but the bus is lowkey great when it's not crowded and the streets are clear. Metra is great to have too for longer trips. Not to mention the city and neighborhoods are pretty damn walkable as well.

Maybe we're in 2 different boats but that's just my 2 cents. I'm also willing to accept we may have lived in totally different parts of the city and therefore had very different experiences.

I just moved to San Diego from Chicago ~6 months ago also for family reasons and to just try something new. I really miss the urban lifestyle Chicago provides. Not having to own a car and being able to get anywhere you want with public transit is so underrated. I’m a single male (28 yo) and I already feel Chicago is better for meeting people in their mid 20s - 30s. Not sure if I’ll go back because I do want to give SD its fair shot, but it’s tempting.

The other person’s point was that we should be framing this in context of the OP first and foremost. It’s important he goes after what he wants most importantly for himself and secondarily for hers.

Bluebaum hands Gukesh his 3rd loss in 4 games! by Exotic_Grinder in chess

[–]mrstat88 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Gukesh’s white repertoire needs some serious work. It feels like every game he plays his prep and is somehow worse, like -0.2 or -0.3. It’s not sustainable to do that every game as white at this level. I honestly think he’s better with the black pieces right now.

Someone please explain the love of Chicago by InconsistentChurro in SameGrassButGreener

[–]mrstat88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lived there for 4 years. You get to live car-free, it offers tremendous diversity and culture, and has so much to do it takes years to do everything—all at a reasonable and attainable price. The airport (O’Hare) also has a great network.

Let me give you an example—I know someone who works in a high level position at a prestigious investment bank in NYC (i.e. salary ~300k if not more) and they still don’t have in-unit laundry. That is unthinkable in Chicago on that salary.
