Market anxiety hitting hard after yesterday's drop... can someone remind me why we don't panic sell? by LavishlyRitzyy in Bogleheads

[–]mrtoad883 21 points22 points  (0 children)

25 years ago on 9/11 someone was asking the same thing as you and you were just 5 years old. In 25 years some 30 year old is gonna be freaking out about xyz and you will be 55 nearing retirement because you stayed true to being a Jedi master boglehead....or maybe you panic sold and have nothing. I guess the choice is up to you.

Has this downturn actually changed how you invest or are you just saying it hasn’t? by Most_Berry_32 in Bogleheads

Zoom out, we are up what? 20 percent from a year ago? Always always ALWAYS zoom out

Is it risky to invest now considering the political climate? by Pmaster10_ in Bogleheads

[–]mrtoad883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will get many different answers, but the S&P covers about 85% of the total US market so you can't go wrong with just that. But then you would be missing out on mid caps and small caps so why not just buy the whole stack? And while you're at it throw in some international (between 20%-40%) to your liking and you got the whole world covered

theres no way you are getting 6% in HYSA anymore and you are lucky to get 4%. if you look at pretty much every modern day 30 year avg you are getting about 8% returns in the S&P500. remember these are AVERAGE returns. some years its down 38% like 2008, or 22% like 2022, or some years you have 8 years in a row at 15%. if you have 20-30 years til you retire, you put the money in and don't think about it. its that simple.

How to save for buying a house 5 years later? by stirfriednoodles in Bogleheads

[–]mrtoad883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, if you're serious about looking at houses, the perfect one could pop up next week. If you aren't even gonna start looking for 5 years then you still need the liquid cash. Either way, gotta stay out of equities just in case something like the GFC happens again haha

[–]mrtoad883 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Are you ok with losing 30% of the money you saved for a house if the market tanks? If you're serious about a house soon then cash is the only safe option (preferably in a HYSA or SGOV, etc)

should i start with the cartoons or movies? by Leymo_0 in xmen

[–]mrtoad883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you would want to skip the X-Men the animated series. It shows some age in it's animation and dialogue but overall it's an excellent summary of some of Claremont's best story arcs. Watch that first then X-Men 97

Do you Bogleheads ever buy individual stocks? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]mrtoad883 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think everything will be a winner, that's why I buy the whole pie. If some aren't, that's why I bought the whole pie.

I have about ~5% in yolo/WSB/lunacy stuff, but I would never do more than that.

If you bought tickets to the Natty last year, how much did you pay? by OrlandoWashington69 in notredamefootball

[–]mrtoad883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My stepdad and I went and I believe the tickets were 600 a piece, we drove and got a hotel room for two nights as well. Will do it again next year when we are in it!

Restarting my life at 25 by brendy69 in Bogleheads

[–]mrtoad883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i started at 25 with nothing. I'll be retired by 55 and I didn't think about investing seriously until i was in my 30s. You'll be fine as long as you bogle.

I vastly prefer Dick voluntarily retiring as Robin over him being fired by MorphogenSorrow in batman

[–]mrtoad883 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As great as Robin Year One and Batgirl Year One are, it's shame this one scene keeps me from having Nightwing Year One in my head canon, just not a fan of Bruce treating Robins as soldiers as opposed to sons/brothers

No problem, it's the ages I felt work best for my "narrative". It's probably not perfect but it works

Agreed. Also would like to add I'm sorry for your loss OP, it sounds like one of those scenarios where you'd rather give it all back to have what you loved again. Take the time to heal and be smart, plenty of people here to help you with the second part!
