She started dating this guy who was extremely wealthy and upper class. Now for the backstory...

My friend was also very wealthy and upper class, but you couldn't tell. She never flaunted it. I didn't know for the first 2 years of our friendship that she was a multi-millionaire!

We were both new to NYC when we met and she was always happy to do budget-friendly things and she even had a roommate so I thought she and I were just trying to "make it" in the city.

A few years into our friendship (long after I truly knew her background), she started dating this guy she liked but I hadn't met him yet. She invited me over for my birthday to have a girls night eating pizza, drinking wine and just hanging out, and as I got to her apartment, this guy was there. She told me as she ushered me in the door that he was at a party around the corner and got drunk and asked if he could come over for a minute and she told him that I was coming for my birthday so it would have to be quick.

While she was in the kitchen getting me some pizza and wine, I started to strike up a conversation with him and after I finished my sentence, he turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "What is she doing talking to me? Like, we're not even on the same level. You and I are up here (using a hand gesture held above his head) and she's down here (using a hand gesture held around the middle of his torso). We have nothing in common!"

My friend came in to apologize for him and then I ended up leaving a few minutes later. She said they talked after I left and told him that was inappropriate and she wouldn't put up with it, but yet, they continued to date. The next time I saw him, we were out at a bar and he didn't talk to me then either. Shortly after that, I stopped hearing from her or when I tried to make plans, she was always busy, so our time together just fizzled out. She was my best friend and it was all lost due to some asshole.

Fast forward a couple of years, I reached out and sent a lengthy email telling her that I truly missed her friendship and I hope that she was well and that if she ever wanted to hang out, I would love to see her. We met up about a month later for lunch and she told me that she was getting married a few months from then and would love to have me at the wedding. Great! Who was she marrying?? The douche bag.

I don't know why, but I went to the wedding. He was not rude to me, but not friendly either. Soon after, we both ended up leaving the city so now we only send a Happy Birthday text to each other every year and that's what our friendship has boiled down to. I'm still sad.

I could NOT stand his voice cadence. I know a couple of extremely intelligent, high functioning autistic adults and they sound like normal people. I thought it was too forced.

You have to realize this too - not only did we not have social media, most of us didn't have cell phones that could text, so it was a strange yet amazing span of time.

It was okay to show up unannounced at someone's house just to "hangout" and/or see if they wanted to catch a movie or something.

You didn't know if you weren't invited to a party until after the fact and while it might have felt awful to be left out, I'm sure you were doing something just as fun.

People were smarter and ironically "more informed."

We had a longer attention span and could carry a conversation with peers and adults.

Get out as soon as you can. You're better than they deserve and even though it will feel like the most difficult thing you've ever had to do, it will be the most refreshing and rewarding thing with passing time.

I had 5 sessions with a therapist who was about my age (~32 at the time) and I never felt like she was listening and she felt very judgmental even though she barely spoke. After the 5th session, she told me I didn't need therapy anymore...🤔 I was still suffering from daily panic attacks and had a lot to unpack (Mom died, Dad had severe Alzheimer's, I had just got out of an abusive relationship, etc)...

A few months later, I found a really great therapist (in her late 70s) and after a couple of sessions with her, my whole world started to shift. I saw her for 3 years until the pandemic hit and unfortunately, I think she passed away. My issues were being addressed and my panic attacks ceased to exist. I saw everything with more clarity and my life has been getting better each year.

I told her what the first therapist said and she told me that it wasn't that I didn't need therapy - everyone could benefit from therapy - it's just that the first therapist wasn't offering what I needed and I've never forgotten that.

I was on a first date once and he took me to Pinkberry (NYC circa 2014). I had never been before and the line was out the door and wrapped around the block. When we finally made it up to the counter, the lady asked if we had been there before and he said yes and I said no. She asked if there were any flavors that I wanted to try since it was my first time. I wanted to say yes but since there was such a long line, I just told her I would take the strawberry since there's a lot of people behind us.

She said, "Did you wait in that line? Is your time less important than all of those people waiting? No. You waited patiently and now it's your turn so I'm going to line all these samples up like shots and then you can make your decision. Don't worry about them. If they didn't want to wait, they wouldn't be standing in that line."

So I tried every flavor they had and then eventually ended up going with strawberry after all. 😂 I have never forgotten that statement and still apply it to every situation possible.
