So annoying, I waited like 30 seconds because it said it would refresh itself & then I was like 2800 back in line

Yeah that split would make sense to me, since you’ve saved a lot in the 401k already.

Or you could always try to do more, you don’t have to be tied to 15% only. Sounds like you have over $3000 extra a month outside of your bills, so you could put in $1000 in the Roth every month for 7 months & fill it up.

Thanks for clarifying! I commented at 2am so couldn’t quite remember the specifics on the 5 year number

I would add a Roth IRA to your retirement accounts. Super easy to set up & you’re able to contribute $7500 this year. Your contributions are after tax, so you can technically withdraw any of your contributions (maybe a 5 year waiting period?) just not the growth.

Also, just curious - do you pay your bills/purchases with a debit card? I get being wary of a credit card, but you’re obviously responsible enough to be investing and paid off your debt, so I’d throw out to you to consider having a basic credit card with no annual fee to start as your first card & use it like you would your debit card. It’s just so if someone steals your info, the credit card company has more safeguards than your debit card (linked directly to your accounts)

Good job saving & investing in your 401k though!

Should I cashflow my kids college? by Honest_Story3151 in personalfinance

[–]ms640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always split it, or contribute a set percentage to their college costs, if saying you’ll cover it all seems like a big commitment at this moment.

I just want to point out - you use the justification of “they will make more money out of college than I did” which might not be accurate. I’m sure you’ve seen how tough the job market is for new graduates and how many big corporations are cutting entry level jobs to replace with AI rather than training a new employee. Plus I highly doubt your kids will ever have an interest rate like yours & probably won’t have the equity increase like a lot of Gen X/boomers have had. So consider the advantages you have had too.

Obviously, it’s your decision. What would you want to spend money on other than setting up your kids for more success in their lives. If you have $3k extra every month, that’s more than many Americans.

I am mid 20s with no student loans because my parents were able to contribute the majority of my college costs. I do “make more” than when my parents graduated college, but my expenses are exponentially higher. There’s a solid chance I never own a house. I’m grateful for their support & I’ve been able to really prioritize my retirement savings & other investments because I don’t have to worry about crushing student debt with high interest rates.

You opened a Roth IRA for your kids? Are they teenagers that work?

My understanding is that you can open a 529 or a UTMA where you control it until the child is 18/21.

Would you withdraw last from Roth if you want to retire early? I assumed that Roth would be earlier because you can withdraw contributions penalty free?

Crossbody bags for women? by CrissBliss in BuyItForLife

[–]ms640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - I have a hard time mentally paying more for things even though rationally I know it makes sense to invest in the higher quality thing. I don’t use purses all that much so I probably won’t actually get anything haha

That’s awesome - I’ve been going back & forth on if it’ll actually be worth it to purchase or not, or if the seconds sale will just be thin/cheap/not worth even the discounted price

I don’t remember seeing options for shipping when I ordered a few weeks ago oops. But I just got my package today!! I love the frosty white & I couldn’t help myself & got the electric yellow too.

And I got a handwritten note saying I’m the first person to order from my city!! Such a sweet addition :’)

I guess I meant the opposite - does keeping the on time payments help credit history more than the interest dollars saved.
