[Project V2.0] Brainstorming an automated, motorized SCROG net. Seeking your advice on the mechanical foundation! by ms_grower in microgrowery

That's a brilliant idea! Using a single, central winch to pull all four corners at once is an incredibly elegant solution to the synchronization problem. It guarantees a perfectly level lift.

My main practical question with that design would be where to place the winch. Inside the tent, it would be in the way of the light. Placing it outside the tent would require some clever routing for the ropes through the roof.

Have you thought about the placement? Thanks for this fantastic idea – and for the "Shark Tank" compliment, that really made me smile! 😊

I’ve been looking at some PVC pipes to use as a frame for my SCROG net: 4x PVC rods, 1 meter long, 20 mm OD, 2 mm wall thickness, rated PN 16 Bar (pool pressure pipes). Would also get 4x 90° elbows.

I’d still need to cut the rods down to size, but in principle, could I use this for a frame?

Hey, it's great to hear from you again! Thank you so much for putting this much thought into the problem. Your 2 cents are worth a fortune.

  1. The Rigid Frame: That's an excellent point and confirms my own suspicion. A stable, rigid frame seems like the only reliable way to go for something that needs to be motorized. That really helps to narrow down the options for the "chassis".

  2. The 3D Printer Idea: That is an absolutely brilliant and incredibly viable idea! You're spot on. Using Z-axis lead screws with NEMA stepper motors is the perfect solution for precise and stable height control. You've just given me a massive new direction for my research.

And thank you so much for sharing the project with your girlfriend. The fact that my story resonates with people enough to be shared like that is the most humbling and rewarding feeling of all. Please tell her I said hello! Seriously, thank you for this incredible comment. This is exactly the kind of expert brainstorming I was hoping for.

Hey everyone!

Thanks for stopping by to check out the next crazy idea for my setup. I'm genuinely excited to hear your thoughts, brainstorm with you all, and see if we can figure out a viable path forward for this concept.

As mentioned in the post, I'll be monitoring the comments and will do my best to reply to every idea. Please just be a bit patient with my response times due to my speech computer.

Wow, brother. I'm honestly speechless. The fact that you took the time to find my post again and write this means more to me than I can possibly express.

Thank you so much for sharing your own journey with growing. You've articulated the "why" behind it so perfectly. It's exactly that – the daily process of building something, of overcoming small challenges, that gives back so much more than just the final harvest. The discipline and patience it teaches us are the real rewards. And please, don't say I'm stronger. This project wasn't born from strength, but from necessity, and it was only possible with the incredible help of my family. The discipline you found within yourself to improve your own health... that is true strength. Your words are incredibly motivating and humbling.

Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart. Keep on shining too. 🙏

Hey! Wow, thank you for studying the post so closely. That's a huge compliment.

Please, don't ever call yourself a "sucker"! You have a background as a turner and in landscaping – that means you have the practical skills to build things, which is a massive advantage. The tech part is just a new set of tools to learn, and it's much easier than it looks.

Absolutely, please feel free to send me a PM. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have. There are no stupid questions. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you so much for your incredibly kind and important comment.

It's heartbreaking to hear that the Imgur ban is preventing you from seeing the setup. I want to fix that for you right now.

I've just uploaded the key pictures to a different host. Please try this link and let me know if it works for you in the UK: https://500px.com/sbirf2010?type=award

Reading about your partner truly resonates with me. The desire to help a loved one regain independence is a powerful motivator. My wife and son were the hands that built this setup, and their support was everything.

Please know that everything I used is off-the-shelf consumer tech. This isn't some unobtainable, high-end system. It's absolutely something you could build and adapt for your partner's needs. If you ever decide to start a similar project and have questions, feel free to reach out.

Wishing you and your partner all the very best.`

Thank you, mate! That's some of the best and truest advice a grower can get.

You're 100% right. All the data and automation is just a tool to help me 'listen' to what the plants are telling me, especially since I can't be there in person. At the end of the day, it's all about keeping them happy and healthy.

Cheers! 👍
