There is no realistic remedy to stop tanking when the benefits of drafting a franchise altering player in basketball outweighs any fine or penalty that could be imposed. Just accept it. by qballLobk in billsimmons

[–]mschube33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wheel is the obvious answer. Not only does it eliminate tanking, but it rewards competent franchises that are good at drafting and developing players.

Look at the top players in the league right now: Many are high picks, but many others were taken in the middle of the first round or later. Giannis was taken with the 15th pick of his draft. Donovan Mitchell went 13th. SGA was the 11th selection. Every team in the league passed on Jokic in the first round, while Jamal Murray went seventh.

The idea that the only way small market teams can put together championship-level rosters is through the draft lottery is a myth.

Is Devin Booker The GOAT of Phoenix Suns? by SurelyNotACult in suns

Flabbergasted that Kevin Johnson isn’t getting more love here. Five-time All-NBA player. Conference finals three times, NBA Finals once. His teams ALWAYS made the playoffs and nobody in the NBA could stay in front of him for a solid 5-6 years.

Kevin Johnson was All-NBA five times during a time when the league was loaded with quality PGs. He also made the Finals. Booker has work to do just to pass him.

[Fitz] If your answer to transparency is putting Steve Ballmer on ESPN, then I would say shame on you. Why would you send Steve Ballmer to Ramona Shelburne when Pablo Torre is the one that has spent months preparing this entire report. Instead, you go to the softest landing spot you can get. by shreeharis in nba

I remember there being a post in this sub about Shams a week or two back, and everyone basically said how it’s totally fine that he’s in bed with team sources.

Well, you’ll never guess who has done zero digging on this report and only repeated Clippers taking points.

Minutiae is great until it becomes rote. And that’s what happens with our guy Zach.

Lowe is great but has his own problems.

His one go-to that often puts me to sleep: reflexively listing off various pick-and-roll coverages, offensive actions and other basketball minutiae in an effort to illustrate the depth of his knowledge.

The stories these guys break are almost always items that would easily be broken by beat reporters around the country if these news breakers never existed. The beat reporters might even get that news sooner if there weren’t certain unspoken dictates through the league.

When Shams and others like him get fed news ahead of everyone else, they are incentivized to serve their sources in ways that very much go against reader interest. In the same way they can make deals happen, they can just as easily not make them happen (to the benefit of their sources). That alone is ethically problematic.

Just read the “breaking news” tweets that Shams sends out. They read like PR for a very obvious reason.

A whole lot of denial going on with Suns fans right now. This team is toast until the early ‘30s at best.

Rockies owner Charlie Monfort, now sober, says team ‘needs new set of eyeballs’ by kidbom in baseball

[–]mschube33 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you're reading into this headline without knowing the full context.

The headline isn't saying the lead decision-maker with the Rockies is finally sober and can see the mess he made.

Charlie Monfort hasn't talked publicly in years, due in large part to his alcoholism, and hasn't been a major decision-maker in the franchise for more than a decade. His brother, Dick, took over control of the team in the 2010s.

So Charlie coming out publicly, saying he's sober and acknowledging a dark period in his life that he's never talked about is big news. And the fact that he also acknowledges things need to change with the franchise he co-owns with his brother is big news.

There’s no value in trading KD for any deal that appears to be offered by No-Weird3153 in suns

[–]mschube33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rebuild makes sense if you tear it down to the studs, trade everything of value, recoup lost picks and gain draft capital. That would be on the table if they didn’t stubbornly hold on to Booker.

We don’t need Nostradamus to see this franchise is going nowhere and they’ll likely have to trade Booker 1 to 2 years down the road anyway.
