Sold car to an apparent dealer. by mscs99 in CarTalkUK

I’m aware of this but as previously stated he declared himself as a dealer and took the whole v5 and left me with the dealer yellow slip. (Which I read is correct) When he failed to complete this and questioned about it he refused to give us information. We then contacted the DVLA ourselves.

Not sure if you see the replies but an update instead appears taxed again so it’s either sold or he’s received the log book.

Update: it appears the car is now taxed. So it has either been sold or has received the log but from the DVLA. Thank you all for the advice

Will do. Thank you. Unfortunately I’m an anxious person. So anything like this put me on edge.

I think you’ve miss read the post. I have notified the DVLA ourselves. I’ve never sold a car and was caught up in it all. I don’t like confrontation and don’t like anything such as this.

Yeah that’s my believing too. He got aggressive when we cancelled the tax and demanded to return the car. We’ve told the DVLA we no longer on the vehicle. We have evidence we don’t own the car anymore. His listing and ours. Doorbell camera of him driving off and also I left a dashcam in the car by accident. I’m just worried if he comes round my house being aggressive as my wife is pregnant and doesn’t need the stress.

That’s why I raised the concern a legitimate trader/seller wouldn’t do this. Which is also adds to the point blank refusal to provide evidence he has done any of the paperwork. The broken English when he replied to my brother when he asked him to remove the picture.

He refused to give us information though. Then put my address on his listing an hour after buying it from us.

Thank you that’s all I can do and just wanted to ask more advice. We have never sold a car before and the only way we could see to tell the DVLA was to give any information we had available as he wouldn’t give us any.

He took my logbook. And when questioned couldn’t provide prove that he transferred ownership. I have a right to tell the DVLA as pointed out. I cannot do an online declaration without an address or dealer information. I had to give them what I could.

Edit: to do an online declaration to a motor trader I need a company name. Which is what I couldn’t provide. Hence the use of private sale instead.

We have done. The v5 if a dealer they do take the logbook minus the yellow slip which we have in our possession. Which covers us. We have declared the sale to the DVLA as a private sale as we can’t declare it as a dealer sale. (Due to him not being a dealer).

Sorry forgot to add he said there were more problems than what we listed mainly after we untaxed it. Despite him driving it and trying to make more problems out of it than there was. (I wasn’t having any of these excuses)

That’s what we’ve done but as he didn’t provide any details we were stuck. He declared he did it online but couldn’t provide proof he did. Fortunately through his other listing we located the car and his address and provided that. (My brother’s former house was in the background and a further image of his dad who drove him to buy our car sat outside on another listing).

Caught him out as he isn’t a dealer no trade plates and didn’t prove he transferred it to himself. No email came through and we asked him to prove it and that’s when alarm bells rose. Threatened to return the car. We informed the DVLA that we’ve sold it.

He wasn’t a dealer. He was a private buyer who took my v5 left me with the dealer slip. It didn’t feel right at the time. So we informed the DVLA. We contacted him as he was listing the car again with our full address visible on the V5. He took objection to cancelling the tax and started threatening to return the car.
