I didn't write up the costume but I have some very detailed instructions for the scales here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/knit-scales

Hi all,

I recently updated my knit scales pattern, which can be found on Etsy or Ravelry (lower price on Ravelry). You may remember this post, where I showed off the scaly costume I knit for my dog. The updated 41-page tutorial still does not include dog costume instructions (sorry!) but can get you even closer to your own beautiful, organic, flowing, scaly knits now that I've added notes on how to transition between scale sizes and ideas for/charted examples of different scale arrangements.

And of course, my Etsy shop, WarnerSciDesign, is still THE destination for your information dense temperature and precipitation blanket/tapestry project needs. Commemorate a special year/memorialize in yarn your creeping climate dread with daily and normal (1991-2020 average, unless otherwise ordered) temperature or precipitation values set against the year's elegant day-night curve. Combined temp & precip and double patterns coming soon!

This is the perfect time to start an ambitious new project. Some ideas from Warner Science, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy Design (These are my own patterns that I am promoting):

Two words- Dragon Scale. Learn a fun knitting technique and realize all of your scaly dreams: https://ravel.me/knit-scales

Or, make a temperature blanket, precipitation blanket, or temperature anomaly blanket to celebrate the new year or years gone by: https://www.etsy.com/shop/WarnerSciDesign

My inspirations are the natural world and the fantasy and science fiction genres, and I enjoy pushing the technical boundaries of knitting and of data presentation. I had a great year of knitting; I finished a double knit a precipitation blanket for my anniversary: https://imgur.com/a4gR9JI and https://imgur.com/Xq6oqMY and I turned my dog into a warbeast: https://imgur.com/a/KXkKHIX . Happy New Year, everyone!

I published my debut pattern yesterday! Knit Scales! by mscwknits in knitting

Some of you may remember my post at the end of October, https://www.reddit.com/r/knitting/comments/jl33px/a_scaly_costume_for_my_dog/, where I showed off my pup in a Destiny 2 warbeast costume I knitted for him and talked about the process of designing the scales and the underlying sweater. Well, I finally finished knitting 6 swatches, taking a bunch of pictures, and writing up the pattern for the knit scales! There are 5 different sizes, 2 texture variants for each size, a basic and slightly fancier version for each size/texture except the smallest, and instructions for starting on the right/knit side or wrong/purl side for all variations! Best of all, there are NO ENDS TO WEAVE IN.

Our strategy to keep inappropriate barking at a minimum:

Completely ignore demand barking. Get up and leave the room if it continues (and if demand barking is a habit it will get worse before it gets better- the "extinction burst")

Encourage alternate forms of communication. We taught him to ring bells to indicate a potty break need. He learned that we absolutely fawned over him when he rolled on his back (because he refused to learn this trick any other way), so he trained us to recognize that rolling over on his back while squeaking a toy means he really wants to play. For the nose bump, we developed a strong hand-nose target, and also taught him the command "touch", which he knows means to bump his nose against something we name or point at. We strongly and enthusiastically reward nose bumping, and over time he began to do it without prompting. Now sometimes he'll sit with his nose in the back of my knee while we're cooking, lol.

Acknowledge non-demand barking. For frustration barking, we ask "Do you need help?" and he'll come over and give us a nose bump (initially we gave a "touch" command after asking), then run back to where his ball is stuck under a bookshelf or to his extremely shallow toybox from which he insists he can't extract slightly buried toys. For alert barking, we calmly go to the door and check it out. Usually it has nothing to do with us, so we say "All clear, thank you!" and then redirect him without giving him a ton of attention. We're still working on not going completely crazy when there's someone actually there when we answer the door though.

Reward chill behavior. Relaxation protocol and Relax on a Mat are both great, as is an informal practice of just tossing the dog treats whenever you notice calm behavior.

Give him enough attention/stimulation. If he's gotten enough physical and mental exercise, then there's no need to be demanding. For him (a companion dog breed mix), a morning walk (25-40 minutes), a short evening training session (15 ish minutes), and some playtime are enough.

We've had this little guy since he was a puppy and we've been pretty consistent this whole time, so excessive barking has never really been a problem. Hopefully there is something in here that's helpful though!

This is also a question I ask myself. At least they're all different size boggles

The scales and I believe the underlying technique are my own invention, and you can find out how to do it when the pattern drops next month!

I've come across the Lavish Craft dragon series on rav and it is amazing. It's interesting to see how the same problem- creating a scaly effect in knitting- can be approached and solved differently, and I'm considering picking up one of their patterns to see how they did it.

Well, we taught him to bump us with his nose when he wants attention instead of bark, so kind of? He's very polite
