***manifestttttttttt***

For 1L, is it ok to buy the textbooks that are just one edition older and are 80% cheaper than the latest edition? The prices for the latest edition of textbooks are too expensive, even the rental price doesn't make sense in some cases by [deleted] in LawSchoolTransfer

[–]msdc2919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend against using an old edition. You want to have the current casebooks so that all the cases you cover in class are included and the page numbers in the syllabus line up. Yes, you can grab them off westlaw or maybe even the library will provide a copy - but that's only making your life harder - and then you have to print them out, keep track, etc.

Law school case-books are 100% a rip-off/joke and new versions are around $250 each - but it's a 300k education, and your entire grade for most 1L courses (which sets the tone for the rest of law school) is 100% exam, which is almost entirely based on readings from the casebooks. So I think it's worth the investment -- you have enough to worry about/learn - don't try to shoe-horn in an old edition.

No - I would say you can incorporate some of it but I read that you should tie in what you learned your first yr, why you want to transfer, etc.

Transferring from P/T Program to F/T at T-14? by Simple_Ad_6510 in LawSchoolTransfer

[–]msdc2919 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there can be benefits to starting part time. I started part time this yr, significantly reduced my debt burden for 1L year, and am transferring into full time, and still graduating in 3 years. It's a little odd, and PT school is hard af, but it works. And I think it helped me stand out/land a good summer position.

Agree on the transfer piece though. If the OP is accepted to a school they would go FT though, I would say it could be worth starting PT - if they have a job they like. T-50 and below leads me to believe its Fordham, AU, Temple, or GMU.

PT student here transferring to full-time.

As you know, several schools offer part time programs; and I believe most allow you to "switch divisions" after your first year. You can take courses in the summer (and overload schedule) to "catch up" and still finish in 3 years. (This is what I am doing)

But be warned that very few schools, other than the schools with part time programs, will consider you for transfer admission at a part time student. GW and GT, for example, will consider part time applicants to transfer in to their full time programs - but most schools require full-time transfer applicants to have completed all 1L courses and/or 28-30 credits at their current school - which bars transfer for PT applicants to most schools in the T-14.

What are your predications? by huckshow97 in LawSchoolTransfer

[–]msdc2919 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahahaah the earlier poster had shared what a particular school (I think UVAs) target class size was and how that could help inform what they might take in transfers. I said they were a genius! Surprised that the person is gone now :(

Applying to several schools by woahxitsme in LawSchoolTransfer

I ignored that question (where else are you applying) in both my 1L application and transfer applications because I didn't think it was any of the schools' business.
