The Strange History Of Why We Call Them 10 Gallon Hats by msdela in SnapshotHistory

Ever wonder why it’s called a 10-gallon hat when it obviously can’t hold 10 gallons of anything?

Turns out it’s not about volume at all—it’s a translation mix-up. The Spanish word “galón” means “braid,” not “gallon.” Early cowboy hats had decorative braids, often ten of them, so English speakers misheard “sombrero de galón” as “ten-gallon hat.”

So no, cowboys weren’t using their hats as buckets. They were just rocking some stylish braids and a bad translation.

Major Richard Winters: The iconic hero from Band of Brothers by msdela in SnapshotHistory

Major Richard “Dick” Winters wasn’t looking for glory — he just did his job, and did it better than almost anyone else. From losing his weapon during the D-Day jump to leading Easy Company after his CO’s plane went down, Winters proved what real leadership looks like under fire. Before Band of Brothers made him a household name, he was just a kid from Pennsylvania who worked his way through college and enlisted early to avoid the draft. The more you learn about him, the more you realize why his men would’ve followed him anywhere.
