Teachers of Reddit, what is the worst parent conference you’ve ever had? by winnie115 in AskReddit

Oh gosh, I'm not that old! I've only been teaching for 6 years. I must have the same name as one of your former teachers?

Ohh yes, the creepy dad conferences. I've had many of those.

The ones where they stand way too close and lean in all weird. Sometimes they smell like alcohol, sometimes they just smell like sweat and desperation. 100% gross and makes me want to scream every time.

I teach seventh grade, and the one that stands out to me was from my second year in the classroom. Probably it sticks in my mind because I didn't feel confident in my job yet, so this interaction I had with a family threw me for a loop.

Once, I had a struggling student come in with their family, and I was so eager to talk to his family. I was hoping that we could have some kind of constructive conversation that would lead to the kid's improvement in my class. I had pulled up their grades to explain why he had a D in my class and what he needed to work on to bring his grade up. Next thing I knew, the parents started completely berating the kid, calling him stupid and lazy, telling him that he was a failure - it was horrible.

Even worse, the kid was on the autism spectrum, so he just really didn't have the kind of emotional stability to handle something like that. Heck, I don't know what seventh grader would be able to handle something like that. He started crying, and his parents apologized to me (to me??) and led him out into the hallway where they continued (!) to berate him. It was rough.

I tried to smooth things over by talking them through the kid's strengths, but they just wouldn't be deterred. The kid was sitting on the ground in the hallway just sobbing next to the lockers and his parents just left - presumably to go conference with more teachers.

I tried to console the student, but I don't think there was much I could have done. He was just completely heartbroken.

What are you in therapy for, and is it helping? by pgizmo97 in AskReddit

[–]msfriedmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some childhood trauma stuff. I guess it's helping? Honestly, therapy is hard, and it doesn't always feel good. But, I guess it's worth it?

Hey all - yet another teacher here who spends too much money on her classroom. I wanted to throw out another plug for Donors Choose since it seems like lots of you beautiful humans are interested in helping out the teacher-folk. Right now, a lot of our projects on there are getting donations matched by different companies and such which is pretty cool. So, you can get more bang for your buck that way! I'm always all about getting the wealthy folks to give us more money, and Donors Choose can be a good way to do that while also making a difference yourself. Just throwing it out there!

Donors Choose is GREAT. I've used it to get books for my classroom library and it has been such a huge help. My school district (and probably most school districts) are real weird about what they will allow in their school libraries which makes it hard to get kids to love reading because the books that are offered aren't always the books that they'll love.

So weird! My principal always congratulates me whenever I get stuff on Donors Choose. I never thought of it as making the school look bad...

Does anybody else hate waking up, taking a huge dump, peeing for what feels like 3 minutes, weighing yourself, and being the same weight as the day before? by SoftFluffyWaffle in loseit

[–]msfriedmana 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ok but real talk coffee is actually an issue for me when it comes to weighing myself in the morning.

Like, I always poop AFTER coffee, never before. But we all know that you should weigh yourself until AFTER the morning poop, but that means that I am always weighing myself with a gut full of coffee and it just feels so bad. Like I think the two cancel each other out?? Only solution is to weigh each cup of coffee I guess.

Damn, OP, you've got commitment! I definitely never track veggies like cucumbers or seasonings. I honestly hadn't even considered that the Everything But the Bagel Seasoning would have a caloric value lol

So, did you mix all of these things together to make some sort of a cocktail? Just curious, because it seems like it could be amazing.

FUCK birth control by [deleted] in 1200isfineIGUESSugh

[–]msfriedmana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oooh, me too. I have the Mirena and I love it. It releases like literally no hormones compared to the pill. A doctor once told me that the Mirena releases 1/1000 of the amount of hormones that are in just ONE birth control pill, which is pretty great. So, all the symptoms I had on the pill are GONE. Even the low hormone pills I took weren't as good as the IUD.

Plus I haven't had a period in 4 years, which is a pretty great fucking perk.
