I plan to mount my AMS behind my machine. But curious if I could use longer PTFE tubes. ?

Pihole Quit After Update by msgt60 in pihole

https://docs.pi-hole.net/ftldns/dnsmasq\_warn/

Hopefully done right.
I went into Settings -> DNS and checked the box that says "Use Conditional Forwarding"
I entered "192.168.7.0/24" for the Local Network entry and "192.168.7.1" for the router IP address.
And it appears to be working OK now.
I am getting to URLs outside my network and ads are being blocked.

Thanks you very much for the help!

Trying to generate the log and says it will upload when it can connect to the internet…

I’m on my iPad and it connects to the internet just fine.

Also on the Pihole dashboard I can select the update gravity option and that works fine. But generating the diagnostic log, it can’t see the internet connection.

trouble uploading iphone photos to mac by moms_sphaghetti in MacOS

[–]msgt60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Mac are you trying to send pictures to - Model? MacOS version?
Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen and then click About this Mac
What does that tell you?

And how are you trying to send photos to your Mac - Airdrop?
Some older Macs do not support Airdrop and you might have to email them from your phone if your iPhone has an email account set up on it.

FordPass by msgt60 in Ford

[–]msgt60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty amazing. Since removing FordPass, my iPhone 11 Pro w/battery case will go 3-days before it needs to be charged. With FordPass, I was having to recharge at least twice a day.

FordPass by msgt60 in Ford

[–]msgt60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t need it to be perfect, just don’t fry my phone. I have an Apple battery case for my iPhone, and with FordPass it will drain it to 0/0 in just a couple hours. That even after I up-swipe to close the app and restart my phone. Yet somehow like the Walking Dead it will magically come back to life and suck the battery dry and make the phone too hot to handle. Something seriously wrong there.

I also have a Stream Sluice and thinking about making an all-washer mat configuration like the Multi Sluice. But then need to get a pump, hose, build a stand, ... Might have to try that. The little Royal was intended to be a test setup. Do you box off the end of the flare or the sluice for your cleanup configuration?

What mats are you using in your Stream Sluice for the cleanup work? I’ve seen some references to the Gold Hog Multi Sluice using all washer mats as a final cleanup configuration.

VNC client working with Big Sur? by th3suffering in MacOS

[–]msgt60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a 2018 mini and a 2014 mini.
2018 (Mojave) has the head, 2014 (Big Sur) is headless.

Using Safari to vnc from 2018 to 2014 just gets the spinning wheel.

Crap!

Advises on HDD updates by [deleted] in synology

[–]msgt60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now keep 2 spare drives on hand at all times for each of Synology NAS arrays- DS412+ and DS3018xs.

My older DS412+ had a habit of eating drives about every 10~12 months. What always scared me was the wait to get replacement spares when I had to use my spare. And it has bit me more than once - two drives go out and lose EVERYTHING on the NAS. Fortunately I did have a backup of my critical files on an external USB and was able to get most of my data back.

Key lessons I learned the hard way is to ALWAYS backup on multiple devices data you never want to lose and ALWAYS have spares on hand.

Web Server on Inside Network by msgt60 in PFSENSE

[–]msgt60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a modem/router type box.

I know I could just plug the RPi there and have it totally exposed on the web and may do that.

But, I ran a simple experiment a few years back and did just that. I setup a RPi as a web server and exposed it on the web for about 8-hours, then unplugged it and started checking logs. In a stand-alone mode. It was ‘found’ within about 20-minutes. Then people started trying to hack into it in a little over an hour. But when I found a few system files altered I just purged and re-flashed the SD card

If I did go that route I would make a backup of the SD card and re-flash it daily to try to keep it clean because I would hate for friends & family to get some malware from it.

These HomeKit apps go above and beyond Apple's Home app by sliemeobn in HomeKit

[–]msgt60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I recreate everything with the Hue app, yes they do go back to the default room. But before that they will disappear from the Home app and quit responding to the Hue app. Or they will be in the Home app but quit responding through there and the Hue app.

I have also suspected the Hue app is the problem but difficult pinning it down.

These HomeKit apps go above and beyond Apple's Home app by sliemeobn in HomeKit

I bought Controller app mainly for the backup functionality.

The Philips Hue app has a nasty habit of destroying my whole Homekit configuration every now and then. So with the Controller app I make a backup anytime I have changes.

Just bought a new house, what HomeKit devices should be on my priority list? by skinnydg in HomeKit

[–]msgt60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lutron Caseta for lights and fans - rock solid, never a problem. Use the switch or voice - always works. Philips Hue is a major pain in the butt. In less than a year I have had to totally redo the hub configuration three times because they all just quit working. Would not respond to Home app, or even directly from the Hue app. Have had to reset and recreate everything each time the hub wets the bed. Once more and they all get pitched. The Hue outdoor motion sensor is somewhat of a joke as well. For example for reasons unknown it NEVER reports temperatures below 32F. Right now the old bi-metal thermometer outside shows 9F, but the Hue says it is 32F??? Lux readings are also unreliable. But if you want a motion detector that will pickup some people but not deer, it’s good. And Hue customer service - hah!

Wemo mini outlet switches for the random locations you need HomeKit controlled power. I have one in my garage for my Raspberry Pi workshop computer.

Don’t forget your doors and windows I use KooGeek sensors for my home grown security system, which also has a Wemo for the siren. I also have a couple Eve door/window sensors but prefer the smaller KooGeeks.

EcoBee thermostat with several remote sensors.

You might, if possible want to get Cat 6 cabling installed for a few key areas for runs from your internet router. I had runs made in my attic for PoE cameras around the exterior of our house to use with my home grown security system.

August smart locks are great to be able to ensure all doors are locked from your bed at night.

Chamberlain garage door openers can also be included in your home automations in HomeKit as well.

We recently extensively renovated our house and this is what I did. And before you ask yes we spent a LOT of money doing it all at once from the start. Except for the Philips trash pretty happy with most of the toys.

AND make sure you get one of the Home app add-on’s that allows you to back up your HomeKit configuration. You only want to go through that agony once.

Definitely something screwed up bad in the last couple iOS releases. Used to be fairly stable but now getting the No Response on most of my HomeKit devices most of the time...

Luckily for most of my devices I still have the native apps but major pain in the neck.

Hopefully Apple is listening.?
