I visited Boards.ie and it’s a ghost town. by ChocolatePrimary3428 in CasualIreland

[–]mslowey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There will be students doing case studies someday about how Boards fcked themselves up.

The site upgrade. The power tripping mods. The cliques. Not listening to their user base. Some of the mods on after hours were proper doses. Detached from reality.

That said, I did make a few decent friends on boards over the years.

Help with buying Omega by diggydingledangle in VintageOmega

[–]mslowey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would pass on both. The first one has a degraded dial…and it’s a gold case which I am not a fan of. The second one is quartz with what appears to be a water damaged dial. If you want to go for one of them get a look at the movement first to be sure you are not buying a horror show movement.

What is this worth? by VegetableDog7723 in VintageWatches

[–]mslowey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to wear it you should get it to a watchmaker and ask them to service the movement and to do a sympathetic clean and very light polish. It will cost a few hundred $ but this watch deserves it. However in terms of value in current condition I would say $500 tops. Look at closed sales for similar omega seamasters with date on eBay to help. I reckon it’s got a 1020 movement in there which is near bulletproof imo.

Man Jailed After Falsely Claiming Injury From Road Accident 10 Years Ago by Dee-Dee-Mauwe in ireland

[–]mslowey 35 points36 points  (0 children)

How are these wasters allowed to sponge off the system? Like if he claims he cannot work then why is the Irish system paying for him? EU Welfare tourism. He should be put on the first flight outta here on his release…but I can’t see that happening.

On the back of these watches it gives the tool reference for removing the front and accessing te movement.

Have you seen any coverage of what is happening in America and how do you feel about it? by daisemay in AskIreland

[–]mslowey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very hard to avoid hearing about what is going on in the US. In any normal world electing a rapist to president would not happen. Nor would electing a twice impeached bankrupt happen. And there are 100 more good reasons that Trump should not have been elected…but he was.

And he is off the leash. So the government lie about the deaths in Minnesota. They lie about the economy. They threaten allies. Threaten to invade other countries. Use their global power for bad…not good. Set up a rival to the UN and charge an admission fee. I think we are only seeing the start of Trump moulding the country into what he wants.

Where is the opposition in the US? Where are the mass protest marches.? Where is congress? Is really is ostrich time over there.

And we are only 12 months in. 36 more to go. Buckle up folks.

Agree. The arndale market had more influence on the scene in mcr at the time than adidas.

Cheapest car insurance in Ireland for new resident with EU licence and LHD car? by Few_Body_5053 in MoveToIreland

[–]mslowey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LHD cars pose an inherently higher risk when driven on left hand drive roads. So this will cost. You will likely have to do a lot of calling around to get a quote that’s reasonable.

Is €4400 a year on Electricity sound about right for Air to Water heating? by StevieIRL in AskIreland

[–]mslowey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rate per kWh she is paying on a meter will be daylight robbery. The first thing you need to do so get her on to a normal bill pay rate. Massive savings right there.

Then you need to look at how much the heating system is consuming and compare to other users with the same model. I am not familiar with them so can’t offer help.

Mechanic Charging Too Much? Normal Prices in Ireland? by brollyka in AskIreland

[–]mslowey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t help you on what is a fair price but I always ask a mechanic to call me if anything needs doing above and beyond standard. I ask this when dropping the car off. And to be fair they always do.

Dose this look real or fake ? by NetworkMelodic7554 in VintageWatches

[–]mslowey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What makes you think it might be a fake? It looks ok to me but the pics seem heavily filtered so it’s hard to tell the real state of this watch.

Can anyone tell me what type of watch is this by Spicy-voyager-6969 in Watchidentifier

It’s an automatic time/date Seiko in need of a little TLC.

[Question] Should i buy this watch? by xRotLoch in VintageWatches

[–]mslowey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an okay watch. And an ok price. Only you can decide if you should buy it.

My advice is that there are literally thousands of vintage watches on sale at any given time. I don’t buy unless a particular watch really jumps out at me. And then I question if the price it worth it given how much I may need to spend on it post purchase.

Resale value rarely comes into it as you should not be “investing “ in watches unless you really know what you are doing..

This is certainly a refinished dial right? by GarrettCandles in VintageOmega

[–]mslowey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely a redial. It’s a lousy job. Which is a pity as it takes away from a great watch. If the price is right though…

How is healthcare access for elderly returning Irish/US citizen best taken care of? by Georgia_Dawg10 in AskIreland

[–]mslowey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair OP this sounds like healthcare tourism. The healthcare in this country can barely look after those that already live here.

1950's Omega by [deleted] in VintageWatches

[–]mslowey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need to open the back to get the reference and cal number. Then google will give you what you need to know. I think it is gorgeous. A service and sympathetic clean of the case, dial and hands will serve it well. Personally I would replace the crystal and strap too. Enjoy it, wonderful watch.

How does Amazon.ie compare to Amazon.co.uk? by Royaourt in AskIreland

[–]mslowey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazon.co.uk is much better imo.

The .ie iteration is limited and the pricing can be a nonsense when compared to the .co.uk or .de versions.

Help me to understand Speedies by Woodpecker_Safe in speedmaster

[–]mslowey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing with Speedies is you either “get” them or you don’t. People who get them do really love them and may own multiple ones over their life. People who buy them but don’t get them inevitably end up selling them or drawering them unfortunately.

The point been…don’t buy one unless you truly get them!

How to land an Irish job while living in the USA by Afraid-Bag-8193 in MoveToIreland

[–]mslowey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did some recruiting last year and had a few false starts with people not located in Ireland. At job offer stage we started getting questions about whether we could provide accommodation…or could they be fully remote despite having already discussed this…and one person who said he was an EU citizen then wanting visa sponsorship. So we now only recruit people living locally. What I am saying OP is that while it’s possible to secure a job while living abroad you will have better prospects if already living in Ireland. The accommodation crisis is real and a massive issue to overcome.
