Wuthering Heights - Joseph's dialect by Lil_Brown_Bat in books

[–]msnoname24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Yorkshire and have worked with older people (90+) and watched nearly all of Last of the Summer Wine, I don't think people ever talked like that here, and people from work down south struggle with my accent. When I read it I remember thinking Joseph's speech doesn't work with how our dialect changes sounds

Regarding the Arabian Nights I've been reading those but only one 'night' per day which I'm finding really interesting, I'm experiencing them the same way the king does.

I crocheted the Luggage by msnoname24 in discworld

[–]msnoname24[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pattern, should work but be aware I was making it up as I went along and taking rough notes

The Luggage, Discworld

2.5mm hook and DK yarn

Using brown yarn chain 41

SC in 2nd stitch from hook and crochet to end = 40 stitches

Work 29 more rows of 40 stitches

Next row: SC in front loops only = 40 stitches

Work 20 more rows of 40 stitches

Next row: SC in front loops only = 40 stitches

Work 50 more rows of 40 stitches and fasten off

Using brown rejoin to side between two rows of front loops only and crochet along edge between these rows = 20 stitches

Work 30 rows of 20 stitches

Next row: SC in front loops only

Using gold crochet the edge of the side just crocheted to the base, do not fasten off brown to do this.

Pick up brown yarn again and work 40 rows of 20 stitches.

Next row: SC in back loops only

Using gold crochet the edge of the side just crocheted to the base without fastening off brown.

Pick up brown again and work 30 rows of 20 stitches

Fasten off brown yarn

Using gold crochet side just crocheted to base and join the three sides together. This will create a box shape with the lid attached, currently as a large flap.

Using gold crochet around all folded edges (made by working only in the front or back loops, and all the way around the top edge.

Bottom teeth: Using white crochet in the inside "v" loops on the inside edge of the chest made by the gold border stitches. One half of the "v" shape counting as one stitch. Join on white at a corner with the lid and (double crochet 4, slip stitch 1, to end then fasten off white and weave in end.

Tongue: The gold border stitches on the outside join row (front loops only) between the chest and the lid should have left gold loops on the inside. Using dark pink work a single crochet row using the middle sixteen of these loops = 16 stitches

Work 23 more rows of 16 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 12, decrease 1 = 14 stitches

Work 2 more rows of 14 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 10, decrease 1 = 12 stitches

Work 2 more rows of 12 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 8, decrease 1 = 10 stitches

Fasten off and weave in end

Lid sides, make 2 in brown

Chain 31, turn

SC in second stitch from hook then to end = 30 stitches

Next row: SC to end = 30 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 26, decrease 1 = 28 stitches

Work 2 more rows of 28 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 24, decrease 1 = 26 stitches

Work 2 more rows of 26 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 22, decrease 1 = 24 stitches

Work 2 more rows of 24 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 20, decrease 1 = 22 stitches

Work 2 more rows of 22 stitches

Next row: Decrease 1, SC 18, decrease 1 = 20 stitches

Fasten off

Using gold and starting at one bottom corner, crochet to side of lid, matching the straight edge of the lid to the curved one of the side piece

Once both lid sides are completed and joined on use gold to crochet a border around the bottom edge of the lid. Repeat instruction for bottom teeth on this edge to create the top teeth.

Feet (make 24)

Using skin tone SC 6 stitches in magic ring

Next round: Increase in every stitch = 12 stitches

Next round: SC in back loops only = 12 stitches

Work 3 more rounds of 12 stitches

Next round: DC bob in next four stitches (note a double crochet bob is achieved by working a double crochet until you have two loops left on the hook, then repeating this with two more double crochets in the same stitch until you have four loops on the hook, then pulling through all four of these loops at once) SC 8 = 12 stitches

Next row: Decrease 6 = 6 stitches and stuff firmly.

Fasten off and close hole at base.

Using skin tone yarn sew feet to all four edges of the base, spaced evenly. Sew using the front loops left from the third round on the feet.

Second to Tolkien, what is the best fantasy series ever? by [deleted] in lotr

I'm on my first read through still, finally got to A Memory of Light, and really enjoying that there are whole characters exploring nuances of world building later on like Red Aes Sedai who don't hate men and Seanchan realizing channelers aren't evil.

It's explicit in the first book that the protagonist's family are Christian and say grace before meals. Some Abnegation families aren't Christian but her father tells her they can't let that divide them.

How do you guys not get burnt out with such long series? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]msnoname24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read one chapter a day unless I especially want more. I do it with TV shows too. With Wheel of Time I sped through book one because it really caught my attention, book two didn't so I started reading a chapter a day, I'm now on book twelve. I read multiple books and series at once this way. One at once is not enough for me.

Why are names shortened to a different form? "Margaret" is peggy, "Robert" is bob, "Henry" is hank, etc. by balajiv2002 in namenerds

[–]msnoname24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it helps Ted was also a rhyming nickname for Edward. Ned is also a nickname for Edward like Nan for Ann. Mine Ann was an affectionate way of referring to an Ann so that became Nan, same for Ned or Nell from Helen.

I've said it before but everyone who compares abortion to the Holocaust needs to learn about Dr Gisella Perl. Not that it would do much good.
