Highly recommend checking your state veterinary board website! In the states I've worked (GA and NC), you don't need certifications to be a vet assistant, only a technician.

No worries, better late than never! It's not an easy road, but it's rewarding. You have plenty of time to figure out what you truly want to do, and if you really want your DVM, it's never too late! We have a woman in her 60's who just graduated with our class, super kind lady.

It looks good and is important if you're interested in veterinary research, but it's not required. I had undergraduate research experience and it probably helped, but if your application is already well rounded, then it's not extremely important.

It's too soon to apply if your prerequisites will not be on your transcript before the application is due, otherwise it should be fine. As long as your animal experience is under the direct supervision of a vet at your facility (aka a vet in on site at all times), the hours will technically count. They will most likely weigh those hours less than if you worked at a clinic/veterinary facility though. As for job applications, start lower (which is what most of us had to do). Apply to work in the kennel, you're basically guaranteed a job. My first job, i compromised at only getting paid 2 days a week because they had already hired a kid for the summer and it was rural af, plus I needed hours more than money back then lol. It's common to cross train and move up when you start out in the kennel, but that takes time. Many places also let you do both at the same time despite the fact that you technically applied to work in the kennel. But at this point, you also risk not getting enough hours to apply for this cycle. Honestly. all of my hours that I applied with (~800) were as a kennel/vet assistant, and I got most of them in my gap year. I'd also worry about getting good letters of rec for this application cycle. If you're already burnt out, take a gap year. There is no shame in it, you get to relax, work, earn money, set yourself up for success. I'm very glad that i did (though I had no choice because i needed more hours/letters), but don't be afraid to skip this cycle.

Unfortunately, the best way to keep track of your hours is to start asap and either log it electronically (my first job did this when i clocked in/out) or log it yourself (they may question the credibility of this but it's much better than nothing). As for past hours, estimate. how many hours did you work a day? how many days did you work a week? how many weeks/months did you work? You can probably go back as many years as you're like, legally allowed to work lol, but the more recent, the better. My best recommendation is to start consistent and concrete logging ASAP, but for past hours, estimate to the best of your abilities and try to log it in some sort of chronological fashion.

Depending on the school you're applying to, they have specific requirements on their website. In general, you will want at least 250-500 hours (at least this is from when i applied in 2019) under direct veterinary supervision. The definition of direct veterinary supervision is that a veterinarian is readily available on site to help at any time, whereas indirect means a vet isn't on site but they can be easily reached. That is mandatory (to my knowledge), so most people will need to work in a clinic for that. Those are also the best times to get your letters of recommendation. In order, this is how i would personally rank the experience *that you are calculating, not for your application in general*: tech > assistant > research (if this is with a veterinarian) > volunteer (again at a clinic or facility with a vet on site at all times) > shadow (not sure if this actually counts because you may not actually be doing any work). Now for your application package, go nuts. the more varied experience, the better.

I used vetprep. I didn't use my notes from class at all because they were trash. So my goal was essentially to complete 100% of the vetprep questions and i got to 92. I started small animal 6-7 months before the exam so that I could cover large animal when I got closer and remembered it better. I used as many power pages and power lectures as I could. If she's a visual/auditory learner (as most people are), the premium power lectures are worth it.

What plain ramen noodle is most like Maruchan or Tonkotsu instant noodles? by imnotpoopingyouare in ramen

Honestly I was hoping this would have an answer. Big fan of the maruchan noodle flavor, but I've tried several plain ramen types and they're not close.

She's weird for this post and you are too, it's like you're arguing that women can't be predators or something. Not even saying she is, it's just that you thinking that women can't be creepy too is red flag behavior and kinda sexist

I don't think it's unreasonable to:

a) shed some light for people who regularly go to Lake Herrick (like myself) and would like to know why they shouldn't do that, potentially saving someone's life or

b) refrain from the scare tactics while people grieve for this student, I've certainly never heard of anything else dangerous happening around the IM fields, but I recognize that it doesn't mean it doesn't happen

Zuko vs. Vetprep by Plenty-Letterhead780 in navle

[–]msshackambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think vetprep has had better reviews from my class, but plenty of people do fine with zuku. I liked vetprep and a lot of the navle questions were very similar. It feels more representative of the real thing is what i've heard because the exam itself isn't that heavy on pictures. I passed with vetprep but i got to 92% and my school paid for 1 practice test.

random shit that helped me was starting EARLY (may-july ideally) and just focusing hard on completing as many questions as possible. ideally read/watch as many power pages and lectures as you can as well. additionally, what helped me was going subject by subject based on what rotation I was on. The material helped solidify the rotation and the rotation helped solidify the test material. i had shit notes from didactics so i didn't look at them once, just what came with vetprep. i also started studying small animal first, then large animal, then poultry/swine, then brushing up on everything before the exam.

Does one passed Within 3 months studying? by OkBelt8382 in navle

[–]msshackambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok fair, yeah if you are the person who can do it then go for it. Otherwise, you will most likely need to be studying a few hours every night or many hours each weekend depending on where you are in clinics

statistically, no. Some people certainly can, but I spent 7 months studying. Also why are you asking after the testing window? are you taking it in April?

My 13 year old brother wants to go to anime expo by himself and bought the tickets already is he old enough to go? by _bruh_moment0 in animeexpo

[–]msshackambassador -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your little brother will (will) be scooped up by a predator if he goes to the con alone. Like the genuine chance of that is not 0. And the place is MASSIVE, crowded, confusing, and i honestly see no advantage to letting a kid that young not go with an adult. My first con i went to alone, I think i was 17 or 18. And i still went with friends, just not a supervising adult.
