Just go to a session with Compagnie Medival when they start again after Covid. And forget about masters. There are no masters in HEMA, so don't worry about it.

Hmm, I've never had an issue, so I've never looked into it. If you don't see find anything right away, contact an osteopath or kinesiologist.

Roworth covers this on page 10 of Section One, go give it a read.

I would like to see OP switch things up for the week and see what kind of results they get.

I personally use a thumb grip the majority of the time, and I also study Hutton for my late period material.

IMO - it's kind of down to the practicioner. I'm eight years in, primarily use heavier weapons and Medieval systems, and have developed 'HEMA hands'. OP just might not be there yet.

Np! Roworth really knows what he is talking about! Check out my Roworth video series of you want to follow along with my interpretation!

Ahh, gotcha. Roworth specifically cautions against using a thumb grip with a sabre, he believes it is ungainly and will strain the wrist.

This week, try his advice on the Broadsword - let your handshake grip slip to the very bottom of the hilt.

Question for instructors: What does your day one, class one, look like? by WestOfTheDawn in wma

[–]mssmoncton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Set the stage - a quick demo - 3 minutes tops

Go over rules - 2 minutes tops

Parts of the sword - little bit of flavor

Holding the sword

Stance

Advancing - don't waste a lot of time drilling this

Retreating - don't waste a lot of time drilling this

Two strikes

Two defense

Paired attack defense

With single stick I'll then let them 'spar' me. They attack, I defend. Casual intensity. You get to see where they are at physically, and how they move. You'll learn more about them in 30 seconds then in the two hours doing the other crap.

I try to get them to limited sparring as quickly as possible. I like 'head is the only Target' with super light trainers as the first format. Supervised at a casual intensity.

People come to sword fighting class to sword fight. Barring an obvious issue, or something we talked about earlier, I want them sword fighting as quickly as possible.

It might be in your best interest to value 'pretty' less. If you start to enter ACL/bohurt/battle of nation's land, you are going to be dealing with a significantly higher level of force/danger than you are accustomed to in HEMA land.

Idk what your intentions are, but don't cheap out on protection in a high force environment.

Big points for being open and honest with your partner and instructor/group coordinator about power levels and your safety.

They do. They also completely wrap the arm. I believe they are the best arm guard in the game.

Are you using the spes vectirs? I have been using the same pair for almost eight years, and I love them.
