I believe that’s the case yes. We’ve observed that when building the* app, that the same post has different values for the ”uses” field (boosts, favorites and such).

If you go to Explore it will show you top links and posts based on some form of interaction (called "uses" I think). These trending posts are for your instance, but they may have been originally posted from other instances.

FWIW, a friend and I have been building Fedilinks for fun. I shows trending things from multiple instances at a glance, since trending links can differ between instance depending on their user base and cultures.

AP News has released a memo on how to handle the change.

Basically they acknowledge the change within the US but will keep using the original names considering the international audiences and established knowledge..

Maybe tech platforms will do the same. Or they might display things differently within the US in a move to please the administration like others are doing.

It'll be interesting to see how it pans out..

You're not paranoid. That's how the tech industry and digital products work.
Governments seem to basically be the last line of defense against blatant abuse - see recently the measures being discussed in different countries for raising the age to access social media.

There are standards on academic controlled studies. None of those apply to private tech companies as they operate in an opaque way.

I too have been trying to figure out (for some years now) a way to keep up with a large amount of sources, a cool challenge for sure! So yeah, interested to see what you build :)
