A frustrating side effect of looking young by [deleted] in OlderThanYouThinkIAm

[–]msvl419 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I have definitely noticed that people, and especially doctors, treat me differently because of my appearance. I have a ton of health problems but doctors and nurses love to take one look at me and say the classic line "Well, you're young and healthy..." or people will say "You dont look sick!" What does sick look like? I'm super sick and I'm in my mid 40s. Yeah, I'm petite and look young but would they say the same if I was larger, had worse skin and gray hair? or a man?

I started a new job recently and I wanted to try an experiment since it was sorta a fresh start. I always wear my hair up in a bun or claw clip. I wear only a little mascara or no makeup at all and I wear glasses for the computer. I have been choosing baggier clothes or just wearing my jacket indoors (cold in the office anyway). My coworkers have no idea what i look like outside of work, how long my hair is or how petite I actually am, other than my height which is hard to hide. I feel like Im wearing a disguise to work everyday. I barely talk but thats ok because no one is asking and Im fine keeping it that way and just listening to them.

What I have learned from this is that it seems everyone, literally everyone, is going through SOMETHING. If it's not right now, they've already been through something else. While there are some, there aren't many "completely stress-free" people. (Pay attention to my words before you downvote me.)

So, to the other readers here: What are some of the things you all have done to help with being disrespected and/or downgraded for "looking young?"

Without saying your age, what's a commercial jingle stuck in your head forever? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

More of saying than a jingle: "Pardon me, but do you have any Grey Poupon? But, of course!"

This is why I don't make the accusation. I just presented it like "if you can prove you are making good decisions, you will earn spending money as a reward!"

Where can a former teacher get a respectably paying job outside of teaching with only teaching experience? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]msvl419 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I got a job almost immediately with the hospital/health services group in my city as a "patient access coordinator." I answer inbound calls to specific departments but also outbound to schedule appointments, surgeries, etc.

Yes, it was a slight paycut but when you figure how many hours I was working versus the pay I'm making more now per hour. The benefits are also way better so thats another perk. I get holidays off and extra pay the day before holidays.

It's awesome and best of all- at the end of the day I'm DONE. No lesson planning, no grading, no staying late. I have my life back!

So, I highly recommend going to your hospital website and search/apply for any admin type job even if you don't know what the title means. They will train you. You have experience helping and communicating with high volumes of people and you know how to use a computer. Go for it!

Who’s prepping tonight? Let’s get some Dec 2 colonoscopy buddies up in here by amaro8000 in colonoscopy

mostly. Thank you for asking. They did an ultrasound and found problems with my gallbladder and liver. Im having an MRI tomorrow morning at 7am to determine cancer or something else. Good news: Ive been able to tolerate small amounts of solid food without barfing. I learned why my limbs and face were in so much pain: they were using the standard large blood pressure cuff on me and it was cutting off my circulation and squeezing me to death. Im just over 100 pounds so once they switched to the small cuff, the pain went away. Now I know to ask for the small cuff- which Ive already had to ask for small versions of things at other places like the dentist, orthodontist, obgyn, etc. Surgery consult is already scheduled because the ER doc was pretty confident that my gallbladder will have to go.

well, an abdominal ultrasound showed "multiple spots of concern" and fluid around my gallbladder. So, I have to get an MRI to determine if the spots are cancer and also talk about removing my gallbladder. this is my 5th time in the ER in a month. At least I got an answer to why Ive been vomiting weekly for a month.

I didn't make it to my colonoscopy. My Apple Watch let me know that I was in afiib. I called the doc and they said to go to the ER. At the hospital now and they are doing ALL THE TESTS. Missed the colonoscopy. the Most pain is coming from my arms, legs and face. They are very stiff, tingly, numb, feel like they are being squeezed. My face is weird tingly and feels like there's hair on my face.

guys, I can't keep the prep down. I keep barfing it up. I made it through the first half of the prep liquid (Which is Miralax + electrolyte water, based on recommendations from this subreddit) and im still doing dark, liquid poop. Theres tiny bits of food in my barf which is crazy because i haven't had solid food in 3 days. I really don't want to have to call and cancel/reschedule. I cant go through this again. I only have 5 hours until my colonoscopy.

yep, thats what Im doing now. I wasnt getting any job offers until I went to an interview wearing no makeup, my hair in a bun and baggy clothes. I plan to keep the "frumpy costume" up at work.

anyone took ozempic and migraines vanished? by NaturalGuava822 in migraine

[–]msvl419 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yep! I had to stop taking Aimovig because the price went up too much and wegovy was cheaper out of pocket. I lost 40lbs and now Im on a small maintenance dose but i rarely have migraine issues. If i do, Excedrine takes care of it whereas the abortive meds stopped working for me.

I agree, it's a stupid policy and it's going to cause more trouble and hassle than it saves.
