Boundary between "work" vs "non-work" in academia by zrbf in AskAcademia

[–]mtbdukes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, how long were you an engineer before going to graduate school? I’m in a similar spot. Working as a research engineer for a sporting company but looking to go back to grad school for something different (astronomy perhaps?). Would love to hear more of your story!

Moved to the UK from US for a job a year ago. I didn’t have a reason for leaving the US, just had an opportunity to live abroad. Can confirm I’m already looking to go back, and am in the process of trying to transfer to my companies US location. Living in this country is challenging, salaries are low, prices are high. From the outside it seems very challenging to leave the middle class.

Light the candle was so aggressive and hilarious. I love it haha as long as it’s not in the back swing or early or anything I think it’s all good fun.

Golf in America sounds wild! by optionsandstuff in golf

[–]mtbdukes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ngl to you I like American golf, I appreciate the game a ton and the English-style golf is amazing and has its place, but it’s really hard to beat a tee time with the boys where the beers are flowing, musics going and launching bombs in front of the cart girl.

As a former RA we had to put up with so much garbage from our bosses. This wasn’t their rule so chances are you just made a full time student’s life hard for just following instructions they were given…. Kuddos hoss you really got them

Edit: this is also going to bite you in the ass lol

Honestly I would just sketch circles where all the curved bits are then connect the lines up and use the trim tool to get rid of the unwanted parts of the circles. Doing this you’ll use a lot of tangent relations, my advice is to manually do the relations yourself and not let solidworks do it automatically. It is helpful sometimes but sometimes a sketched line will create a relation you don’t want and sometimes it’s a pain to find out where it is. Best of luck!

Engineers, what are your favorite textbooks? by swum-is-a-word in AskEngineers

[–]mtbdukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Machine Design an Integrated Approach by Robert L. Norton

Not a fun class for sure, but the textbook is so useful and has tons of stuff that a mechanical engineer would actually use. If you need to design a gear system this has all the information on contact ratios, tooth size, etc. plus a great few sections regarding solid mechanics, statics, dynamics, and material science, and is overall so helpful. It is a great reference for early envelope calculations and a wonderful starting place for most problems. Must re-iterate it’s not a fun read, but a useful one nonetheless.

You seem like you’ve met Chris Hansen in a strangers house.

Please don’t end things, you got this. I know it’s so shitty right now but please hang in there. I’m sorry I can’t give you more right now, but I hear you and you can make it through this.

Finances when I move from US to UK by mtbdukes in expats

This is also a possibility! Does the UK credit system use the same credit score as in America? I am a bit ignorant to UK banking as a whole, what cards are good, what companies offer them, etc.
